Gaming PCs, Real Time Strategy Games, And First-Person Shooters ...

It used to be the case that entertainment was centered around the TV; it was just this way for decades. From the 1950s on through to the 1990s, the TV was the central thing that families gathered and huddled around. In fact, many cartoon sitcoms have actually been established around this idea, sort of mocking it, sardonically. But that?s all rapidly changing, really quickly. Gaming PCs are changing this; tablet computers are changing this; even smart phones are shaking this all up. There isn?t a singular sort of medium or pipe that feeds to us the bulk of our entertainment content. Instead, today, what you?re finding is that things are more diversified. You have to expect that with these Gaming PCs as well.

The gaming world is rapidly changing in all terms.

You?re finding more and more females starting to enter markets of products that have been dominated by male consumers. You?re seeing this with the first person shooter category of games, and you?re seeing this with (especially) the RTS category (or what?s referred to as the real time strategy category of games). To these ends, as your tastes for certain games becomes a bit more honed and sophisticated, you?ll learn to start to crave for certain things in Gaming PCs. For instance, sound might be more critical with a real time strategy game, because these are games that involve better management skills, more than anything else.

You?re not really looking for quick reflexes, like you might be with first person shooters. So the kind of Gaming PCs that you might favor, may actually contain better sound cards, and perhaps even high fidelity audio equipment (such as the special jacks for component and HD audio).

But again, if you?re on the first person shooter side of games, then you may favor better graphics. Because with that category of game, you?re really looking for the visual cues, as opposed to the audio cues. You?re ducking behind barriers; you?re peaking around corners, and the like. And as such, you may require better monitors and better video cards for your Gaming PCs. And building the PC in and of itself is kind of like a sport. It?s kind of like a game, because it?s as if you?re building your own robot or a robotic suit or avatar that you wear or use when it comes time to compete online.

6 Palestinians killed in school bus crash (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A truck lost control in slick, rainy weather and barreled into a Palestinian school bus on Thursday, killing five children and a teacher and drawing hundreds of people to a West Bank hospital in an outpouring of grief, police said.

The bus left the city of Ramallah on a school excursion but returned due to heavy rains and stormy weather, according to Palestinian police spokesman Yousif Osrael. On the way back, a truck careened into the school bus, causing it to flip and catch fire, Osrael said. The children killed were aged four to six.

The accident was in the central West Bank, in an area Palestinians claim as their future state but where Israel has full control. Both Israeli and Palestinian rescuers arrived at the scene, and evacuated at least 30 injured passengers to hospitals in Ramallah and Jerusalem, according to Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The truck driver was an Arab Israeli and all the victims were Palestinian, Rosenfeld said. Israeli and Palestinian police are investigating the accident. But Rosenfeld said there is no suspicion of foul play and its likely that the wintry weather and slick roads caused the collision.

After the accident, Palestinians rushed to the Ramallah Medical Compound hospital to check on their children and donate blood.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning and ordered flags flown at half-staff. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his condolences and pledged to give any aid necessary to the Palestinian Authority.

"It was a tragedy," Abbas said outside the hospital. "It was God's fate. There was rain and fog and that is what happened."

Palestinian police initially said the crash killed at least eight people but later updated the tally to six ? five schoolchildren and one teacher. Police said 42 were injured, including three in critical condition.

House leaders praise emerging payroll tax cut deal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congressional leaders of both parties praised an emerging deal Wednesday to extend a payroll tax cut and extra jobless benefits through 2012, but cautioned that bargainers still had to nail down final details.

The rare, bipartisan consensus reflected a desire by both parties to put the long-running drama over the issue to rest and a shared sense that their tentative agreement was probably the best deal they could get. The pact came together after House Republicans conceded that the roughly $100 billion payroll tax cut would not have to be paid for with spending cuts.

"I do expect, if the agreement comes together like I expect it will, the House should vote this week," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told reporters.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Democrats were pleased that the package will extend the payroll tax cut and extra jobless benefits and block a 27 percent cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements. Without action, the tax cut, added unemployment benefits and current rate of Medicare benefits would otherwise expire March 1.

"We're way down the road from where we were just a few days ago," she said in a brief interview.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., one of the bargainers on the legislation, said there were "just a couple of little wrinkles" left that he believed would be resolved on Wednesday.

"I think a lot of people realize Congress is not enjoying a great reputation," he told reporters. "Both sides recognized the need to get this done."

Lawmakers said among the unresolved items were details of the savings to be used to pay for about $50 billion of the roughly $150 billion package.

Once finalized, the measure would be an election-year victory for President Barack Obama, who made the payroll tax cut a keystone of his largely ignored jobs creation plan in September.

On Tuesday, House Republicans emerging from a closed-door meeting said reaction to the package was generally positive, with some saying it reflected a desire to avoid spending months debating an issue that cost them dearly last year.

In December, the House GOP initially opposed a two-month extension of the tax cut and other benefits that were about to lapse, only to retreat under pressure from outside party leaders and conservatives.

"We've got to move onto another issue," said Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla. "I think that's what the mood is."

Republicans were determined that Obama not be able to claim that the GOP was standing in the way of a middle-class tax cut. They would rather spend the months leading up to the November presidential and congressional elections focused on GOP themes of opposing tax increases, higher spending and Obama administration regulations that they say stifle job creation.

The tentative compromise would extend through December the current 2 percentage-point cut in the usual 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax deducted from workers' paychecks. That reduction, which saves $1,000 a year for families earning $50,000, would affect 160 million workers and would otherwise expire on March 1.

Excluded, aides said, was a collection of expiring tax breaks, largely for businesses buying equipment and other corporate expenses that had been sought by some lawmakers of both parties.

Participants said the Medicare payments to doctors would be paid for by reducing Medicare reimbursements to hospitals and by cutting about $5 billion from an $8 billion program under Obama's health care overhaul aimed at battling obesity and smoking.

The unemployment benefits would be financed with a collection of savings that include government sales of parts of the broadcast airwaves to wireless companies and from boosting federal workers' contributions to their pensions.

In private, some Democrats called it a victory, pointing to the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefit extensions while heading off the GOP's earlier demand that the entire measure be financed with spending cuts and other savings. Others complained that the jobless benefit extensions were not generous enough.

Republicans claimed victory, too, noting their rejection of early Democratic efforts to pay for the payroll tax cut by boosting taxes on millionaires, and with jobless extensions that would be less than the 99 weeks under current law that Democrats wanted to renew.

Aides said the current 99-week maximum would fall gradually to 73 weeks by late summer in states with the worst unemployment, though a GOP aide said most states' ceiling would be 63 weeks. Republicans had wanted to cut the maximum to 59 weeks.

Republicans abandoned provisions from a House-passed bill that would have required the jobless to pursue a high school equivalency degree to get benefits and let states require recipients to undergo drug testing.

States would be able to test applicants who lost their job because they failed a drug test or are seeking a job that requires one.

They also dropped other House-passed language forcing low-income people to have Social Security numbers to get government checks by claiming the children's tax credit, a move that was aimed at illegal immigrants and caused a furor among many Hispanics.

Early Tuesday, Obama tried turning up the heat on Republicans to strike a deal.

"Just pass this middle-class tax cut. Pass the extension of unemployment insurance," he said at a White House appearance. "Do it before it's too late and I will sign it right away."

No assurances of access to Iran site: U.N. nuclear watchdog (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Tuesday the agency does not know if during talks later this month Iran would give it access to a military site named in a report that said Iran could have worked on nuclear weapons.

Yukiya Amano, director general of the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency, said at an event in Mexico City that he hopes a second round of talks with Iranian leaders scheduled for February 20-21 "will be a good, constructive one."

Three days of talks in Tehran between IAEA experts and Iranian officials at the end of last month produced little progress toward resolving disputes about Iran's nuclear program, Western diplomats said.

The IAEA sought access to the Parchin military complex, named in a November report by the agency that said Iran appeared to have worked on designing nuclear bombs.

Asked if the agency would get access to Parchin, Amano said "We don't know yet."

"Parchin is not the only issue. Our objective is to clarify all the other issues and this cannot be done overnight but we hope that there will be a concrete outcome," he told Reuters in an interview, adding that the last meeting was not conclusive.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the long-running nuclear dispute.

Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and rejects allegations that it is building atomic weapons. It has refused to stop uranium enrichment and has vowed to retaliate over oil sanctions imposed by Western countries and any military attack.

Suspicions about activities at Parchin, southeast of Tehran, date back at least to 2004 when a prominent nuclear expert said satellite images showed it may be a site for research and testing relevant for nuclear weapons.

United Nations inspectors were allowed into the site a year later but not to areas where the November report said an explosives chamber was built.

Amano is hoping the exchanges with the Iranians will lead to real progress in the new talks.

"On our part we will continue to be taking a constructive approach and I expect an equally constructive approach on their part," he said at the event commemorating the 45th anniversary of a regional anti-nuclear proliferation treaty.

Ode Part 2: An Unseen Face ? Seen ? Fatherhood Poetic's Roots to ...

?

My last post featured that excellent shot of the headstone of one of my 64 fourth-great-grandparents, one Mister Thomas Bilderback, who lived and died in the rolling and wooded hills bounded on the east by Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh), and on the west by the due-southerly bit of the Ohio River. He was born as the American Revolution sparked and would live into the winter of 1831; he would have been in his late teens or so when every grown man in the area seemed to be up in arms (literally) against the new US government in what would be called the Whiskey Rebellion (protesting the government demanding a tax on locally produced whiskey.)

Thomas holds a special place in my genealogical journey. When I did the obligatory 7th grade family tree assignment I was referred by my mom to a thin manilla folder containing a decent amount of info on her parents, grandparents, and back to their great-grandparents, ie, back to a few folks who were my great-great-great grandparents. I dutifully recapitulated the info for school but what the school assignment didn?t reveal was that I had also fully been bit by the genealogy bug. I was hooked BIG TIME, and thus began my personal, utterly fulfilling and educational journey. Yadda yadda.

Among those 3rd-gr-grandparents were a couple whose names were George Campbell and Rachel Bilderback. And they were, that personally fateful Sunday-afternoon-before-the-assignment-was-due the ?Primae Ancestori?, the unwitting recipients of my family-tree hunting engine. They were the ancestors I identified with, were my vicarious guides into the past of my family that was the past of America, too. This trip (and it surely was ? and remains ? a total trip!) was given through these two a precise physical location on planet Earth; a place from which to embark.

They were born, he two days after Christmas in 1800, she in mid November twelve years later in a place called Washington County, Pennsylvania.

?

And where the f**k was that????!

?

?

It was the 80s. I was in Scottsdale, Arizona. Rand McNally helped me see that this hoary old land of my ancestors was about 15 miles due west of Pittsburgh?which was just as without any experiential referent for me at that time as the someone?s birthplace being handed down as a county.

?

I jest a little, but at the time the place really did take on some almost???????????? mystical depth of meaning for me. It was, for all intents and purposes, ?where it all began?, in the personal epic I was discovering/navigating for myself. (I, a Campbell, was born in Washington, District of Columbia, and it seemed somehow fitting and just that my furthest-back Campbell ancestor known right off the bat in the genealogy discovery journey was born in the nice and even year of 1800 in a place also named for the Father of Our?? Country.

?

George Campbell and Rachel Bilderback were my talisman.

That very summer after getting the family tree bug I went to spend a few weeks with my aunt and her family who still lived in DC. She?d paved the genealogy road? before me and not without a full understanding of the solemnity due the occasion opened up her work to me. No single, thin, manilla folder, this.

And the first thing I learned was that? I could barely contain my excitement? there were others. She?d discovered further ancestors and pushed the collective knowledge back another generation or more here and there. And the first name I learned, the first ?next generation? ancestor was Rachel?s father, Thomas Bilderback. If George and Rachel were the ones who seduced me into the whole new world, then Thomas was the first ?elder?, the Obi Wan, the first handhold that would allow going further back, further into the past, mine, his, and others?. I also learned of my aunt?s source, a fellow traveler, as it were, but hardly the novice I was. (And if Thomas was the abstract ?elder? in my mind, then Harry Liggett, a 4th cousin, and forty years my senior, was the real world analog. He?d been researching for some time already, back in 1984, and as one does in this endeavor, had shared much with my aunt. And remember, these were the days way before ?online?. Harry and I communicated on some topics directly in due time, and it was he who took the photo of our ancestor Thomas Bilderback?s tombstone that appeared on my previous post. Hi, Harry! :-)

Fast forward.

I had my actual DNA analyzed last year. The service (23andme.com) facilitates communication between oneself and other people whose DNA has matches; i.e., people to whom one is related. So one of these people with whom I shared a match, well, the match was a little more than infiniesmal (as many such matches are) and we both noted many of the same names in our backgrounds.

After a little poking around in this person?s family tree (they?d posted on Ancestry.com) I found the link. Lo and behold we were both descended from Thomas Bilderback!

Just like when you finish reading a book or suchlike and all the details about the book, story and author take on more significance by dint of each thing having been given context, so after realizing who our common ancestor was I again examined this newfound relative?s family tree and the picture of her great-great gradnmother immediately jumped out at me.

See, in having been into this for so long I?ve spent untold amounts of time staring into pictures of my ancestors and their relations. Those who know genealogy also, of course, know that we will never see photographs of ancestors who died before the 1840s (roughly) because photography was not invented until then. But almost everyone who was alive since then had their picture taken. So even after the great moment when you verifiably push your family tree further into the past, beyond your great-great-grandparents, you have to live with the fact of never ever seeing those ever-so-slightly-more-distant predecessors. For those immersed in this genealogy thing, we can?t help but wonder ?what did they look like?? because it?s the counterpart of ?who were they??

Back to our tale of the Unseen Face.

So my newly-found relative had a picture posted of her great-great-grandma, which caught my eye. The woman in question, named Lacy Jane Miller (nee Campbell, which, no relation, oddly) was first cousins to my great-great-grandpa, a guy by the name of George P.B. Campbell, pictured here:

What caught my attention, however, was Lacy Jane?s resemblence to the older brother (Thomas) and younger sister (Amanda) of my gr-gr-grandpa. Here are all three, together. From left, Thomas B. Campbell and his sister Amanda R. Campbell, and then Lacy:

Again, the two on the left are brother and sister. The woman on the right is their first cousin. (Despite the ?Campbell? surname ? both fathers bore the last name Campbell but were not closely related ? the two on the left along with their brother George, my gr-gr-grandpa, and the woman on the right are related through their mothers, Rachel and Margaret Bilderback, daughters of Thomas Bilderback.)

The resemblence is, at least to me, huge. And so the immediate implication is that since these three share the shape (if not the setting as well) of their eyes, that can only be through their mothers, who were sisters, and by extension, from the sisters? parents.

Was it said, within these people?s families, that they looked like grandma or like grandpa? Either way, they inherited those eyes from their Bilderback grandparents. In all likelihood, 200 years ago, either Thomas Bilderback or his wife Margaret Preston Bilderback, was doing their thing, looking very much like one of these three people, their grandchildren. And their unseen (never to be seen) faces bubble up and back to us?to be seen, through the past dimly.

I seem to find again and again that no real good is ever served in passing judgment on other people. I say that as an opener because it seems important to frame the following statement since I mean it in no way to impugn or invalidate anyone who happens for whatever reason or reasons not to have children. OK, so that said, becoming a parent on July 14, 2003 removed any shred of doubt I may have had that children, babies, kids, and being a parent are the fundamental meaning of existence. Put another way, the luxury of being conscious is afforded by the protein shakes that embody the tightly wound systems dances of life on earth, and since we humans have memory and the ability to enact change in our world unlike any other creature yet known, when any of us engage or find ourselves engaged in the reproductive continuum, doing everything within our powers to maximize the thriving potential for the spawn we've engendered is a moral imperative. If ya don't have a personal stake in the reproductive continuum, you're hardly off the hook, as simply doing and being good is still your responsibility. But this all sounds so frikking stern and joyless! Ach! It ain't like that. SO who am I? OK: when I became a dad, I'd celebrated my 32nd birthday a few months before that, and interestingly, the day before my daughter's birth marked the 33rd anniversary of my conception. Wacky! I'd been born in Washington, DC to a woman from Minnesota who'd thrown her smarts into organizing public school teachers into unions and helping them be better teachers. She'd decided to have me on her own, and went for it, raising me alone through job-promotion-related moves through Indiana, Seattle, Montana, Denver, and finally Phoenix/Scottsdale. She fostered an amazingly comfortable intellectual bubble for me. She had met a mid-40s artist (sculptor, potter, art professor) in the summer of '67 around the university she'd just graduated from and at which he taught art. Being from Liverpool at that time, and hyper smart were not hurt by Italian good looks he'd inherited from his mother, and sparks flew as they say. Their part-time, later long-distant involvement found them together but one night in 1970. Although my mom was upfront about not demanding much from him, I gotta say, the guy still handled the news of new-found fatherhood pretty good. I met him for the first time on Christmas of 1973 when he came to visit us from his home in Boulder to Indiana. There were a few more visits up to 1977. At that point he seems to have decided to focus elsewhere in his life, landing in San Diego in ca. 1979 -- the same year my mom and I landed in Phoenix, where she remains. After 10 years in suburbia I ran screaming for an alternative intellectual incubator in the woods of western Massachusetts: Hampshire College. I studied writing, American history, political science, media, critical theory, ancient literature, a little cognitive and neuro science and the mind in general. I bonded with heroic people, trees, hiking and experiencing music. I took a year off and found house music and techno music and lived in London and backpacked around Europe and saw Socrates' jail cell, the ruins of Hitler's bunker and read Ulysses. I wrote short histories to get my degree and ran to San Francisco, eager to embrace the wave that showed every sign of breaking there at that moment. And brake it did. After a year working in the techno music grassroots industry and planting roots in it, I landed a writing job at what came to be known as a dot com. It was Nov 1995. I was on a first name basis with Craig, Dave, Joan, Marc and Halsey, of craigslist, RSS, MoveOn, Macromedia and CNET fame. I wrote for lots of dot coms, magazines, and was part of an emmy-winning team producing TV. I got to go to Germany, Italy, London, Seattle, New York, DC, Baltimore and New Orleans for amazing work gigs. It was unique. It is the past. I met a woman April 7, 2002 through a mutual friend who not only laughed at my jokes, but thrust into reparte right off the bat. I found her beautiful and she's whip smart. We married in Las Vegas 104 days later, throwing a big bash two months later so everyone could see it was real. Just over a month later pregnancy changed our life together forever. We both lost our jobs before the baby arrived. To this day, the moment our daughter emerged from my wife's stomach is uncategorizable. Suffice it to say the shit chokes me up when I recall or tell it, even now. I worked some crap-ass jobs for a while before finally gaining entre back into the dot com industry in 2005, where I still work, now in Oakland. I also write about music for the Village Voice, and am working on a few different writing projects. Oh yes, and two kids. I do tend to go on.....lol

William Lucas Walker: Spilled Milk: Prop 8: The Color of Pee-Pee

Our son was 3 years old when Prop 8 passed, too young to understand what was going on but just the right age to articulate his thoughts on those yellow "Yes on 8" signs he saw everywhere. They were, he announced, "the color of pee-pee."

On some level, he got what was happening to his family.

Six months earlier, on May 14, 2008, my children and I had helped their Papa celebrate his 40th birthday. Since Kelly was born here in Los Angeles, we took him on a sort of "This Is Your Life" driving tour. We visited the hospital where he was born, his childhood home in Sylmar, his kindergarten and elementary schools. After that we drove to Pasadena so we could show the kids the spot where Kel and I had met, in the courtyard of All Saints Episcopal Church. Growing up, Kelly's mom had told him that if he was lucky, he'd meet the person he was going to marry at church. As usual, she was right, though I doubt she pictured a bride with my testosterone levels.

The next morning, May 15, a late, unexpected birthday gift arrived. It wasn't the sort of thing you could wrap or slip into a card. It was too big. Huge, in fact. The California Supreme Court had just handed down a landmark verdict: Kelly and I were no longer banned from getting married. That night, after nine years and two children, I was finally able to propose to the love of my life. There were tears, so it was fitting that our daughter captured the moment on the video camera we've used to record every moist event in our family's life together, from her sticky birth to the time she threw up on her grandfather.

Kelly insisted that we marry the first day such unions would become legal, June 17, before -- as he so presciently put it -- "they try to take it away from us." Bastards. That's what I was thinking. Our children will no longer be bastards! Our plan to correct this problem was to take the kids to the county courthouse, pay for our license, and get hitched then and there. But our next-door neighbor had other ideas.

"You finally get the right to marry, and you're not having a wedding?" cried Judy. "You have to have a wedding!" I told her we were on a tight timetable -- three weeks -- and besides, a wedding wasn't in our budget. Judy was hearing none of it. "We'll help you," she said. "We'll make it happen."

"Who'll make it happen?" I asked.

"Your neighbors. The Ladies of La Punta Drive!" I wondered by it was so important for her to see us get married, so I asked, and she answered: "Because we love your family, and we want you to have what we have." A moment I'll never forget.

So the Ladies of La Punta kicked into high gear. Mary, an attorney, forever reversed my low opinion of lawyers by baking us a spectacular, three-tier wedding cake. Alexa augmented a $100 flower budget by grabbing a machete and taking to the street like some feral florist, whacking down enough greenery to turn our living room into a lovely, low-cost garden. As for Judy, she took pictures with a broken wrist, while Lisa handled the nuptial food, demonstrating what every parent of a pregnant bride has known for years: there's nothing like Costco for a quickie wedding reception. Neil, our daughter's godfather and an Episcopal priest, officiated. Our attendants were our children: Elizabeth, then 7, and James, 2-and-a-half. Elizabeth called herself our groomsmaid and never looked more radiant. Or proud. James froze on the aisle, as 2-year-olds have done throughout time. Still, he managed to strew a path of leaves for his parents as they strode toward a day they thought would never arrive.

Nothing can compete with the birth of your kids for sheer depth of joy, but our wedding day was a close second. Kelly and I repeated the vows we'd made to each other at a religious blessing of our union at All Saints Church in 2001. Only this time we were able to use the words "lawfully wedded." We were married, in the eyes of our god, our state, our friends and family, but, most importantly, our children.

2012-02-10-CakeTopper.jpegThe reception rocked. Way back in 1995, I had written the gay wedding episode of Roseanne, the first time a national television audience had witnessed such a(n illegal) thing. At his sitcom reception, Martin Mull, who played one of the grooms, looked aghast at the wedding cake topper Roseanne had concocted for him. She explained herself in her trademark nasal whine: "I couldn't find anything with two grooms, so I ripped off the bride and stuck on one of D.J.'s action heroes from Pocahontas."

I loved that cake topper and had kept it as a souvenir. When Mary told me about the three-level, 18-million-calorie confection she planned to bake, I dug the topper out of storage. And once again, these two little men, plastic but clearly meant for each other, took their place on the frosting, this time as a legally married couple: Mr. and Mr. Captain John Smith. Our children thought it was funny. And it was.

But as Elizabeth and James watched our wedding day unfold, what neither of them realized was this: though it may have seemed to be about us, this day was very much about the two of them. Marriage has a way of providing kids with a sense of stability most children take for granted. Now our kids no longer had to stand on a playground wondering why everybody else's parents could be married but theirs could not.

Five months after our happy day, the "Yes on 8" campaign convinced over half of California's electorate that my family's having equal access to marriage is a Very Bad Thing. I heard them say, a lot, "Why do you need to be married? You guys get the same rights and protections as marriage. It's just called domestic partnerships; really, it's exactly the same," as if pointing in the far distance and saying, "See, there it is, way over there. Squint." I grew up in the segregated South, and those arguments sounded awfully familiar. I was in a domestic partnership for eight years; I've been married for five months. The water does not taste the same.

In the final weeks leading up to the election, as I was driving Elizabeth home from school, we passed a newspaper stand on which someone had plastered a "Yes on 8" bumper sticker. She became visibly agitated, as she did whenever she saw a "Yes on 8" yard sign. She asked if I would stop the car so that we could scrape off the bumper sticker. I explained to her that we live in America and there's a thing called freedom of speech, which means everyone has the right to express their opinion, as long as they're not hurting anyone. She started to cry, saying, "But they are. They're hurting our family. Why do all those people want to hurt our family?" It was one of my lowest moments as a father.

Prop 8 passed that November. Elizabeth's second-grade class had been following the presidential election, so she knew about percentages and majorities. What she was unable to wrap her mind around was the fact that over half the voters in California thought we had no legal right to be a family.

It was months before she told me about the nightmares she'd been having, dreams of people with yellow signs coming to our house with torches, trying set fire to our home. I wish I were making this up. Sadly, no. Thanks, National Organization for Marriage. To you I would say this: if, as your misleading campaign ads bleated for months, you main goal is to protect children, how could you possibly do this to mine?

We got married that very warm, first possible evening in June, not to be part of history or to make some political statement, but because we're a family and want what's best for our kids. Luckily, California's Supreme Court subsequently held that our marriage, and the other 18,000 marriages performed during those five months, had been entered into in good faith and could not be evaporated by a vote. But what about the other families, the ones who weren't lucky enough to marry when they had the chance?

Even with Tuesday's court ruling finding Prop 8 unconstitutional, with the inevitable stays and delays as the case likely works its way to the Supreme Court, for months and probably years we'll have California kids standing on playgrounds wondering why they can't have married parents like their friends.

This post is the first in a series of Spilled Milk columns by William Lucas Walker that chronicle his journey through parenthood.

Perfect Health Diet ? Pork: Did Leviticus 11:7 Have It Right?

If we were to rank popular meats by their healthfulness, the order would be (1) fish and shellfish, (2) ruminants (beef, lamb, goat), and (3) birds (duck, chicken, turkey). In last place would be pork.

Given the iconic place of bacon in the Paleo movement, it?s worth exploring the evidence against pork.? George Henderson has given us a great place to start:? ?Nanji and Bridges identified possible problems with pork plus moderate alcohol in 1985 and other researchers have confirmed the pattern since.?

Pork Consumption and Liver Cirrhosis

Pork consumption has a strong epidemiological association with cirrhosis of the liver. Startlingly, pork may be even more strongly associated with alcoholic cirrhosis than alcohol itself!

The evidence was summarized by Francis Bridges in a recent (2009) paper [1], building on earlier work by Nanji and French [2]. A relation between pork consumption and cirrhosis of the liver is apparent across countries and has been consistently maintained for at least 40 years.

Here is the correlation between pork consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis in 2003 [1]:

The correlation coefficient of 0.83 is extremely high ? rarely seen in epidemiology. Correlation coefficients range from -1.0 to 1.0, and a coefficient of 1.0 would indicate that cirrhosis mortality was strictly proportional to pork consumption. The very low p-value confirms the statistical association.

Here is the relation between alcohol consumption and mortality from liver cirrhosis:

The correlation coefficient is lower than for pork consumption.

In epidemiological studies, beef, lamb, and pork are often grouped together as ?red meat.? However, this may conceal differences between pork and the ruminant meats. Bridges found that beef actually appeared protective against cirrhosis:

In the present study using 2003 data, a significant negative association between dietary beef and rates of cirrhosis mortality was found?. [D]ietary beef may be a protective factor regarding the pathogenesis of alcoholic cirrhosis. [1]

This would be consistent with considerable evidence, discussed in our book (pp 57-58), showing that saturated fat is protective against liver disease, while polyunsaturated fat causes it. Epidemiological data confirms that saturated fat is protective; here is Bridges again [1]:

[A]nalysis of data from 17 countries indicated that diets high in cholesterol and saturated fat protected (i.e., inversely correlated) against alcoholic cirrhosis while polyunsaturated fats promoted (positively correlated) cirrhosis [8].

Beef is high in saturated fat, low in polyunsaturated fat. Pork is relatively high in polyunsaturated fat.

If the fat composition is playing a role, perhaps it is not that surprising that pork is more strongly related to cirrhosis than alcohol.

Either fructose or alcohol can react with polyunsaturated fat to produce liver disease. Sugar consumption, for example in soft drinks, may be just as likely to combine with pork to cause a cirrhotic liver as alcohol. But no other common dietary component can substitute for the role of polyunsaturated fat in causing liver disease.

Here Nanji and French summarize the correlation of pork with liver disease even in the absence of alcohol:

In countries with low alcohol consumption, no correlation was obtained between alcohol consumption and cirrhosis. However, a significant correlation was obtained between cirrhosis and pork. A similar relationship was seen in the ten Canadian provinces, where there was no correlation between cirrhosis mortality and alcohol consumption, but a significant correlation was obtained with pork. [2]

But fat composition is hardly likely to be the sole issue with pork. Most polyunsaturated fats in modern diets are derived from vegetable oils, not pork. It seems that there must be something else in pork besides polyunsaturated fat that is causing liver disease.

Pork and Liver Cancer

We would expect that if pork can cause liver cirrhosis it will also promote liver cancer, since injured and inflamed tissues are more likely to become cancerous.

Indeed, there is an association between pork consumption and the primary liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma. Nanji and French [3] write:

The authors investigated the possibility that dietary fat, meat, beef, and pork consumption might be factors that would, in addition to alcohol, correlate with mortality from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in different countries?.

The correlation between HCC and alcohol was 0.40 (p < 0.05); that with pork consumption was also 0.40 (p < 0.05). There was no correlation with total fat meat, beef, and cigarette and tobacco consumption.

Here is the raw data by country:

Another way of looking at the data is based on countries with low and high incidence of HCC. Countries with high incidence of HCC eat more pork and drink more alcohol, but actually eat less animal fat:

Pork and Multiple Sclerosis

Nanji and Norad [4] looked for other diseases that correlate with pork consumption, and hit upon multiple sclerosis. The connection is remarkable:

A significant correlation was obtained between prevalence of multiple sclerosis and ? pork consumption (r = 0.87, p less than 0.001). There was no significant correlation with beef consumption. [4]

As noted earlier, a correlation coefficient of 0.87 is extremely high, and a p-value below 0.001 also shows a very strong relationship. MS is much more likely to befall pork eaters. Such a strong correlation makes it look like pork, or something found in pork, is the cause of MS.

Nanji and Norad further note that beef, the ?other red meat,? is not associated with MS:

The correlation between pork consumption and MS prevalence was highly significant. Also, of major significance was the absence of a significant correlation between MS prevalence and beef consumption. This is consistent with the observations that MS is rare in countries where pork is forbidden by religious customs (e.g. Middle East) and has a low prevalence in countries where beef consumption far exceeds pork consumption (e.g. Brazil, Australia). [4]

The correlation between pork and MS may be seen here:

Lauer [5] verified the pork-MS link, but found it to be characteristic of processed pork:

When ? quantitative data are taken into account, and a combined factor ?smoked meat? or ?smoked pork? is formed, the association is very high throughout. This factor is also compatible with the high risk of multiple sclerosis in Scotland and particularly in the Orkney and Shetland Islands and with the only transitorily high incidence in the Faroe Islands [6], whereas coffee can hardly explain both epidemiological features.

Arguments for the biological plausibility of some agents occurring in smoked and cured meat (in particular nitrophenol haptens and their protein conjugates) have been put forward [7]. There appears at present to be no plausibility for the factor ?margarine?, which was also not compatible with the temporal pattern of multiple sclerosis in the Faroe Islands. [6]

Conclusion

There are remarkably strong correlations between pork consumption and liver disease, liver cancer, and multiple sclerosis.

What can be behind those relationships? The relatively high omega-6 fat content of pork may be a contributing factor, but it can?t be the whole story. It seems there is something else in pork that makes pork consumption risky.

What is it about pork that is so dangerous, and what does it mean for our dietary advice? That will be the topic of my next post.
