Pakistan: In twist, Muslims accused of blasphemy

(AP) ? Pakistan's blasphemy laws may be used to punish Muslims suspected of ransacking a Hindu temple in an intriguing twist for a country where harsh laws governing religious insults are primarily used against supposed offenses to Islam, not minority faiths.

The blasphemy laws, sections of which carry the death penalty or life imprisonment, have drawn renewed international scrutiny this year after a young Christian girl in Islamabad was alleged to have desecrated the Muslim holy book, the Quran. A Muslim cleric now stands accused of fabricating evidence against the girl, who has been freed on bail and whose mental capacity has been questioned.

Police officer Mohammad Hanif said Sunday the anti-Hindu attack took place Sept. 21. The government had declared that day a national holiday ? a "Day of Love for the Prophet" ? and called for peaceful demonstrations against an anti-Islam film made in the U.S. that has sparked protests throughout the Muslim world. Those rallies took a violent turn in Pakistan, and more than 20 people were killed.

Hanif said dozens of Muslims led by a cleric converged on the outskirts of Karachi in a Hindu neighborhood commonly known as Hindu Goth. The protesters attacked the Sri Krishna Ram temple, broke religious statues, tore up a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, and beat up the temple's caretaker, Sindha Maharaj.

"The attackers broke the statues of (Hindu deities) Radha, Hanuman, Parwati and Krishna, and took away the decorative gold ornaments," Maharaj said. "They also stormed my home and snatched the gold jewelry of my family, my daughters."

Maharaj and other Hindu leaders turned to the police, who registered a case against the cleric and eight other Muslims. But none of the suspects had been found as of Sunday, police said.

Officials said the case against the attackers was registered under Section 295-A of the blasphemy laws, which covers the "outraging of religious feelings." That section of the law can apply to any religion and carries a fine or up to 10 years imprisonment.

The Asian subcontinent's British rulers originally framed blasphemy laws partly as a way to prevent violence among Muslims and Hindus. Muslim-majority Pakistan was carved out of India in 1947, and under the military rule of Gen. Mohammad Zia ul-Haq, a fervent Islamist, the statutes covering blasphemy were toughened in the 1980s.

Area police chief Jaffer Baloch said authorities were simply considering the Hindus' complaint under the relevant section of the law.

Islam's Prophet Muhammad "teaches us to respect others' religions so that ours shall also be respected," he said. "Like us, Hindus have their own faith and religion and they do have sentiments for their Bhagavad and gods."

Human rights activists say Pakistan's blasphemy laws are too broad and vague, and are often used by people who are trying to settle scores with rivals or target religious minorities, who make up 5 percent of Pakistan's 180 million people.

Although many Muslims are accused of insulting Muhammad or other acts deemed blasphemous, minorities are disproportionately represented among the defendants, rights groups say.

Hindus and Christians are among prominent minorities who fear the blasphemy laws. Also frequently blamed for blasphemy are Ahmadis, who consider themselves Muslims but are reviled as heretics by mainstream Muslims.

Pakistan is not known to have actually executed anyone for blasphemy, and while courts often set the accused free on technical grounds or other reasons, many extremists have killed people who were let go by judges.

Even speaking out against the blasphemy laws can put people in danger. Two prominent politicians, including the sole Christian member of the federal Cabinet, were assassinated in 2011 for urging reform of the law.

The politicians, Punjab province Gov. Salmaan Taseer and Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, had spoken out in defense of Asia Bibi, a Christian sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Bibi, whose case prompted international criticism, is believed to be the first woman condemned to die under the statute and remains in prison.

The laws retain broad support in Pakistan, where Islamic conservatism is on the rise alongside extremism and Muslims are highly sensitive about their faith. Taseer's killer, for instance, was hailed as a hero in many quarters. Thousands of people rallied to support him, and lawyers showered him with rose petals.

Many human rights activists, partly out of their own security concerns, have tempered their demands: years ago, they used to call for the blasphemy laws' repeal, but now they say the laws should be reformed to prevent misuse. Even leaders of minority religious groups have often said they support the law but simply do not want to see it abused.

Although there's no sign that the weak civilian government plans to amend the law, the case of the Christian girl has brought some hope that sentiments about it may change. Even some Islamist clerics sympathized with the girl, whose age has been said to be 14 or younger and who may be developmentally disabled.

Witness claims that a Muslim cleric stashed pages of a Quran in the girl's bag to make it seem as if she burned them have added to the sympathy for her. The cleric is accused of planting the evidence to push Christians out of the neighborhood and is now being investigated for blasphemy himself. He denies any wrongdoing.

Tire tariffs saved jobs? Don't believe everything in a campaign ad

Tire tariffs saved jobs? Don t believe everything in a campaign ad

I listen to most of the political ads during an election year. I just don't believe what any of them try to tell me.

Here's a case in point: One of the latest ads for the re-election of President Barack Obama trumpets how he stood up to China by imposing steep tire tariffs. The ad says:

"When a flood of Chinese tires threatened a thousand American jobs, it was President Obama who stood up to China, and protected American workers."

For those of you who read my blog regularly, you know what I think of that statement (see "Tire tariffs did not equal jobs, despite what President Obama said"). So I don't believe the second claim of the ad.

However, the ad also offers up a quote from Presidental candidate Mitt Romney's book, "No Apology: the Case for American Greatness." Here's what the ad said the former Massachusetts Governor wrote in response to the tariffs:

"President Obama's action to defend American tire companies from foreign competition... is decidedly bad for the nation and our workers."

I'm sure one of the reasons for the use of the quote was to show that the president defended American tire companies. I don't believe the president's action was intended to do that. That's a "no" to claim number three.

Did they really need defending? No. A number of them were producing low-cost Chinese consumer tires for export to the United States, so the tariffs hurt them, too.

In fairness, some manufacturers quietly supported the tariffs. They did help raise prices and force many consumers to buy "better" and "best" tires instead of "good" after they wore their tires to the bone. That sure helped their profitability.

But to find out who the tariffs really defended, you would have to read the full quote:

?President Obama?s action to defend American tire companies from foreign competition may make good politics by repaying unions for their support of his campaign, but it is decidedly bad for the nation and our workers. Protectionism stifles productivity."

I shouldn't have said I don't believe anything the political ads say. I believed the very first claim in the ad:

"I'm Barack Obama, and I approved this message."

Of course he does.

Now an aside. Both of the photos used in this blog are screen captures from the ad, which was paid for by Obama for America. The first photo is self-explanatory.

However, I couldn't figure out where the second photo, which was used to represent Chinese tires, was taken. Here it is.

??

If anyone happens to know where the second photo was taken, just respond to this blog.

Marchionne keeps ACEA presidency after VW spat

PARIS (Reuters) - Sergio Marchionne, president of European carmakers' association ACEA, said he had not resigned that role at a board meeting on Friday after calls by German automaker Volkswagen for him to go.

Marchionne's repeated calls for co-ordinated production capacity cuts to help alleviate Europe's car market crisis have highlighted a division between Europe's money-losing mass market carmakers, including Fiat , of which Marchionne is chief executive, and their better-performing German rivals.

A sparring match between Marchionne and Volkswagen began with remarks Marchionne made in a newspaper interview about the German carmaker.

Marchionne said after the board meeting at the Paris auto show: "We're good friends," referring to Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn, as they embraced for a photo.

Marchionne said on Thursday he would be prepared to resign from ACEA if he lost support of the board. He told Reuters late on Thursday he was not expecting any "fireworks", however.

Marchionne suggested in a New York Times interview in July that Volkswagen was undercutting competitors by engaging in a price war in Europe, where manufacturers are struggling, leading to a call by Volkswagen for Marchionne to resign from his ACEA role.

Clinton urges 'cool heads' in China-Japan dispute

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged China and Japan on Thursday to let "cool heads" prevail in a festering dispute over a cluster of islands in the East China Sea that has soured ties between Asia's two largest economies.

Clinton met Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of this week's U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York and said it was important to ratchet down tensions over the islands, known as the Diaoyu islands in China and the Senkaku Islands in Japan, a senior State Department official said.

"The secretary ... again urged that cooler heads prevail, that Japan and China engage in dialogue to calm the waters," the official told reporters.

"We believe that Japan and China have the resources, have the restraint, have the ability to work on this directly and take tensions down, and that is our message to both sides," the official said.

Yang, however, used a portion of China's annual address to the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday night to forcefully restate Beijing's stance that the islands had belonged to China from ancient times and were seized in 1895 after Japan defeated the Qing Dynasty in a war.

The top Chinese diplomat also condemned the Japanese government's purchase of the islands from their private owner, earlier this month, a step that sparked protests across China and prompted Beijing to curb bilateral trade and tourism.

"The moves taken by Japan are totally illegal and invalid," Yang said of the purchase, which Tokyo says was done to dampen down the dispute by preventing the islands' use by Japanese activists.

"They can in no way change the historical fact that Japan stole the Diaoyudao and affiliated islands and that China has sovereignty over them," Yang told the General Assembly. Diayudao is what China calls the main island in the cluster.

He urged Tokyo to resolve the issue through negotiations.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement on Yang's meeting with Clinton quoted him as saying Japan "must abandon its illusions, face up to reality and earnestly correct its errors."

Clinton was due to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba and South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan in a three-way meeting on Friday. Japan and South Korea, two close U.S. allies, have also seen their relationship rocked in recent months by maritime territorial disputes.

In hourlong talks on the sidelines of the United Nations on Tuesday, Japan's Gemba urged China to exercise restraint over the dispute. Japanese diplomats described the meeting as "tense," as Gemba endured a stern lecture from China's Yang.

The islands - located in waters thought to be rich in natural gas deposits - have been administered by Japan since 1895, but China has declared them "sacred territory," and Taiwan has also asserted its own sovereignty over the area.

ESCALATION RISK

Tokyo and Beijing have traded increasingly sharp words in the dispute, which has seen both countries send patrol boats in a game of cat-and-mouse in the waters near the disputed islands, raising concerns that an unintended collision or other incident could escalate into a broader clash.

The United States has said repeatedly it takes no position on the sovereignty dispute, but believes it is important for China and Japan to work out their differences peacefully.

In her meeting with Yang, Clinton also touched on territorial disputes in the South China Sea that have set Beijing against a number of its Southeast Asian neighbors, including the Philippines, a close U.S. ally.

China has resisted calls by the United States and some Southeast Asian countries to agree on a multilateral framework to settle the disputes, preferring to engage with each of the other less powerful claimants individually.

The U.S. official said Clinton welcomed moves by China to restart informal meetings with members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, most recently in Cambodia two weeks ago, as a sign of progress.

"We expect these meetings are going to continue in the lead-up to the East Asia Summit in November," the official said. "This is precisely what the secretary has been advocating, that they restart a dialogue."

Clinton met later with a delegation of ASEAN ministers, who were guardedly upbeat about China's latest moves, a second U.S. official said.

"We are going to have to wait and see over the course of the next several weeks, but we have obviously encouraged the process to grow and deepen," the official told reporters.

Clinton and her Chinese counterpart also discussed North Korea, which remains locked in a dispute with the international community over its nuclear program, as well as the possible next steps as the world's major powers confront Tehran over its own nuclear ambitions, the official said.

Clinton also raised the issue of Syria, where China has joined Russia in blocking U.S.-led moves within the U.N. Security Council to take tough measures against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as his government engages in a bloody struggle against armed rebels.

How Not to Mistake an Online Marketing Misstep for a Dead End ...

It?s an error in judgment that is often made by many business owners over the course of their careers. All too often a person is quick to dismiss a lack of results from a new initiative as being representative of a no-win battle. Before new strategies can be proven one way or the other, these operations end up being dropped in favor of tried-and-true tactics that yield consistent but altogether few results. Although there is certainly something to be said for cutting losses before they go spiraling out of control, most people poorly assess the potential strength of their advertising and miss out on the rewards they could reap with the right approach.

The same can easily be said about many businesses trying to tackle organic SEO marketing. After the recent developments with Google?s Panda and Penguin algorithms, increasingly more companies are coming to the realization that the same old tactics that were once used to climb up search engine result pages (SERPs) have become antiquated or even completely useless. Now some companies are turning almost exclusively to pay-per-click and other forms of inorganic for the bulk of their internet advertising efforts. However, by eschewing full SEO campaigns, they too end up significant SERP presence.

Having the Right Response to the New Environment

While we?ve already covered how to work within the new constraints set by Google over at Penguin Watch, what is really going to matter most for companies looking to maintain or improve their standings is the approach itself. Yes, duplicate content, hidden links, and other unethical SEO development methods have fallen by the wayside (rightly so), but it?s the mentality that?s being applied to the new content that will ultimately determine how the future unfolds.

When in doubt, business owners should be producing websites that follow a strict set of guidelines:

  • All new content made, be they blogs or additional webpages, should be interesting and useful to readers. This will encourage shares on social media and help give the content real web presence.
  • All content should be original in both copy and purpose. This keeps pages from getting de-ranked by Google and also improves the likelihood of certain keyword groups leading to immediate search results.
  • The end user is your focus, not a site crawler. When all is said and done, Google?s algorithms are intended to get its users to get to pages they want in as little time as possible. If you can get these users to find your page and then stay on it, you?ve succeeded in your efforts.

Finally, it?s important that companies new to the world of SEO and online marketing turn to experts in the field instead of going it alone. While there is a wealth of advice and general tips out there for how to run your own organic campaigns, the best methods and techniques change constantly. Always seek out the aid of a SEO company with years of experience for the results you want.

Following decline, DNR 'challenges' hunters to recruit, offers - WEAU

EAU CLAIRE, Wisc. (WEAU) - A major part of Wisconsin's economy is looking for a boost, which could increase job numbers.

The Department of Natural Resources said Baby Boomers are keeping their rifles and blaze orange gear at home, so it's pushing a new campaign called the "Hunters Challenge," asking current hunters to recruit new ones and are offering licenses to first time hunters for just $5.

"(The Baby Boomer population is) starting to drop out of hunting participation, we don't have the younger, equally sized population moving in to fill in behind them," D.N.R. District Wildlife Supervisor Jeff Pritzl said.

"We're actually asking the hunting communities ... To do their part to try to bring more people into the hunting community and they can track their performance from year to year," he said.

Staff said the Eau Claire Gander Mountain has seen a slight decrease in hunters coming through, but that youth numbers are rising especially with the D.N.R. offering the discount to first time hunters.

"Getting a license for only 5 dollars is enticing a lot of the younger generation. Hunters safety classes are going crazy too, a lot of demand for that in the area," Gander Mountain hardline manager Peter Baldus said.

Eau Claire's Rod and Gun Club is seeing its highest membership ever, with a strong influx of youth and women joining in recent years, according to board of directors member Doug Burrows.

"The future is bright, with the kids coming up into it. They're discovering it's fun, it's fun to be outside," Burrows said. "This is really encouraging to see the family get together whether it be for hunting or just target practice."

The D.N.R. said it's seen the same increases, along with new health conscious hunters, but the challenge is to keep them active in the sport.

"The question is when they become in their 20s, and their lives get busier, will they continue?" Pritzl said.

The D.N.R. said every 28 hunters support one job in Wisconsin in license and permit sales.

Gun deer hunting season starts Nov. 17.

Design Car Interior: Looking at cheap auto insurance and company ...

With most insurance companies there are things that set them apart from other companies that may appear similar. It is also true that an insurance company is not necessarily a good one just because it claims to offer the lowest rates. You want cheap auto insurance from a reputable insurance company. And you can get that by reviewing a company's ratings. Many agencies, including JD Power and Associates, provide annual lists of the top insurance companies based on several factors.

Coverage Provided

Getting the coverage you need is important. You want sufficient coverage but you do not want to pay for coverage you do not need. An insurance company that always seems to be pushing an upgraded policy on you can be a nuisance. You want your insurance provider to provide information but leave the decision making up to you.

Premium Rates

The competitiveness of the rates is tied with the coverage that is provided. A cheaper auto insurance is not always a better insurance. Low rates are ideal but what you really want is the best value for your money. This means you have to consider the amount of coverage you are getting for the amount of money you spend. You should also take the deductible into consideration. A low rate is great but if your deductible is too high, you may face a financial hardship if you are involved in an accident.

Claims Processing

This factor focuses on the ease at which claims are processed as well as how long it takes for a claim to be approved. Insurance companies that make it easy to submit claims get ranked higher. Most insurance providers now have online claim processing centers. Not only is the claim process faster, but it is more convenient.

Value-Added Services

Complimentary services such as free roadside assistance or free rentals are important to many drivers. These services may not be offered by every insurance provider. Or, you may only get these benefits if you purchase a certain level of coverage.

Customer Service

You want to be able to speak to a company representative when needed. A company that provides 24-hour service may be ideal as long as representatives are knowledgeable and helpful. You might want a company that has a strong online presence with representatives ready to chat with you.

An insurance company's reputation will impact your insurance experience. You can still get cheap auto insurance that includes good coverage by reviewing a company's ratings. To review individual auto insurance companies, check out Standard and Poor's ratings.

Scientific discovery offers 'green' solution in fight against greenhouse gases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A low-cost new material that could lead to innovative technologies to tackle global warming has been discovered by scientists at The University of Nottingham.

The porous material, named NOTT-300, has the potential to reduce fossil fuel emissions through the cheaper and more efficient capture of polluting gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). The research, published in the scientific journal Nature Chemistry, demonstrates how the exciting properties of NOTT-300 could provide a greener alternative to existing solutions to adsorb CO2 which are expensive and use large amounts of energy.

The new material represents a major step towards addressing the challenges of developing a low carbon economy, which seeks to produce energy using low carbon sources and methods.

Potential applications

Professor Martin Schr?der, Dean of the Faculty of Science at The University of Nottingham, led the research. He said: ?Our novel material has potential for applications in carbon capture technologies to reduce CO2 emissions and therefore contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

?It offers the opportunity for the development of an ?easy on/easy off? capture system that carries fewer economic and environmental penalties than existing technologies. It could also find application in gas separation processes where the removal of CO2 or acidic gases such as SO2 is required.?

Carbon footprint reduction

The researchers understand the significance of their findings due to the importance of tackling greenhouse gases.

Professor Schr?der said: ?It is widely accepted that it is imperative that the CO2 footprint of human activity is reduced in order to limit the negative effects of global climate change.

?There are powerful drivers to develop efficient strategies to remove CO2 using alternative materials that simultaneously have high adsorption capacity, high selectivity for CO2 and high rates of regeneration at an economically viable cost.?

And NOTT-300 delivers on each of these criteria. Because of this, the new discovery could signal a marked improvement in terms of environmental and chemical sustainability.

The material is economically viable to produce because it is synthesized from relatively simple and cheap organic materials with water as the only solvent.

High uptake of CO2 and SO2

Professor Schr?der said: ?The material shows high uptake of CO2 and SO2. In the case of SO2, this is the highest reported for the class of materials to date. It is also selective for these gases, with other gases ? such as hydrogen, methane, nitrogen, oxygen ? showing no or very little adsorption into the pores.?

In addition to high uptake capacity and selectivity, it is also very easy to release the adsorbed gas molecules through simple reduction of pressure. The material has high chemical stability to all common organic solvents and is stable in water and up to temperatures of 400?C.

Professor Martin Schr?der and Dr Sihai Yang led a team of researchers from the University?s School of Chemistry in conjunction with colleagues from Peking University, The University of Oxford, ISIS and Diamond Light Source. The team used the ISIS facility and the Diamond Synchrotron beam to gain important structural information about how the gases bind to the host material and to understand the properties of the NOTT-300 that make it selectively adsorb CO2 and SO2.

The research was funded by the ERC Advanced Grant COORDSPACE and ChemEnSus, an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Programme Grant.?

T-Mobile has Las Vegas ready for the iPhone - Know Your Cell

You generally don't hear carriers crowing about the performance of phones it doesn't sell but T-Mobile is boasting about the 4G performance?you'll get on its network when you use an unlocked iPhone in Las Vegas.

That's right, T-Mobile is the only major carrier in the United States that doesn't offer the iPhone, but the company has repurposed some of its spectrum in the 1900Mhz band to work well with unlocked iPhones. In fact, T-Mobile is saying that an unlocked iPhone 4S using its network in Las Vegas recorded 70 percent faster download speeds than the iPhone 4S on AT&T's network.

I think what this announcement really shows is how important the iPhone is in the American smartphone market and how much it hurts T-Mobile to not be able to offer devices like the iPhone 5. A large reason why it can't sell Apple smartphones is that its 4G network operates on odd spectrum, but one would think that if it offered enough money, Apple would find a way to accommodate it. I mean, Sprint is spending about $20 billion to be able to offer the iPhone and even smaller carriers like Cricket Wireless offer Apple's smartphone.?

We know that T-Mobile will also make a push to woo the unlocked iPhone crowd but I don't know how significant this will be for its bottom line. The company did say that it already has more than one million iPhones on its network but it will need 10 times that amount to really move the needle on its bottom line.?

Newly discovered molecule could deliver drugs to treat diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Kansas State University researchers have discovered a molecule that may be capable of delivering drugs inside the body to treat diseases.

For the first time, researchers have designed and created a membrane-bounded vesicle formed entirely of peptides -- molecules made up of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. The membrane could serve as a new drug delivery system to safely treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

A study led by John Tomich, professor of biochemistry at Kansas State University, has been published in the journal PLOS ONE in September, and a patent for the discovery is pending.

The peptides are a set of self-assembling branched molecules made up of naturally occurring amino acids. The chemical properties of a peptide create a vesicle that Tomich describes as a bubble: It's made up of a thin membrane and is hollow inside. Created in a water solution, the bubble is filled with water rather than air.

The peptides -- or bubbles -- can be made in a solution containing a drug or other molecule that becomes encapsulated as the peptide assembles, yielding a trapped compound, much like a gelatin capsule holds over-the-counter oral remedies. The peptide vesicles could be delivered to appropriate cells in the body to treat diseases and minimize potential side effects.

"We see this as a new way to deliver any kind of molecule to cells," Tomich said. "We know that in certain diseases subpopulations of cells have gone awry, and we'd like to be able to specifically target them instead of attacking every cell, including healthy ones."

The finding could improve gene therapy, which has the potential to cure diseases by replacing diseased cells with healthy ones. Gene therapy is being tested in clinical trials, but the biggest challenge is how best to deliver the genes.

Methods include cells with a virus being injected into the body, and liposomes -- fatty compounds -- carrying the genes. However, these methods may present some problems.

When a virus is used, the body's immune system can attack the virus or cause a tumor. Lipid-based systems may cause inflammation and may not properly bind to cells.

The peptides created by Kansas State University researchers have advantages over their lipid counterparts. The peptides have improved stability and durability, are easier and quicker to create, and they could be delivered to a specific area in the body.

The peptides can be designed to have the ability to target cells, tissues, tumors or organs, and to encapsulate chemical reagents, antibodies, toxins and inhibitors, Tomich said.

"We don't even begin to know all of the potential applications for this discovery," he said. "We envision that many products could be packaged and delivered using these peptides."

Partial funding for the study came from the Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center, National Institutes of Health and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

Kansas State University collaborators include Sushanth Gudlur, May 2012 doctoral graduate in biochemistry, who first published the results in a dissertation; Pinakin Sukthankar, doctoral student in biochemistry; Jian Gao, former postdoctoral fellow in the department of biochemistry; Luz Adriana Avila Flores, graduate research assistant in the department of biochemistry; Yasuaki Hiromasa, research assistant professor of biochemistry; and Jianhan Chen, assistant professor of biochemistry. Takeo Iwamoto from the Jikei University School of Medicine in Japan also was a collaborator.

Alaska World Affairs Council: Stories of Struggle, Stories of Hope: Art ...

A topic that is not often discussed at the Alaska World Affairs Council?s typical events is that of our common humanity. What, though, is more worldly and more related to our international relationships than that which unites us? In his TED Talk (which can be viewed below), Chris Abani discusses what makes up our humanity, and how the people he has known in his life have taught him the importance of the human relationship.

?

Chris Abani is a Nigerian poet and novelist. As a young man, Abani wrote a spy novel about a foiled coup that incidentally mirrored a real-life attempted coup against the Nigerian government. Accused of laying out the blueprint for the attempted coup, Abani was imprisoned in Nigeria at the age of 18. Although he was released, he was later arrested and tortured twice more. Abani directs his experiences into his writing, resulting in ?searing poetry? and poignant novels, all the while maintaining an optimistic view on life.

During his lecture on October 5th, which is sponsored by UAA Student Activities, Chris Abani will be discussing human stories of struggle and hope, and how art, politics, and human rights intertwine. The lecture will be held on at 7:30 p.m. in the UAA Student Union Den. Admission is free for all, and there is no need to RSVP.

A Note About August 2012 Video Metrix Reporting

With the release of August 2012 U.S. Video Metrix data, comScore introduced three important methodological enhancements to our estimates that will affect data on a go-forward basis. The first enhancement is the incorporation of updated demographic universe estimates based on data from the 2010 U.S. census, which provides an improved accounting of the percentage of the population falling into each demographic segment. The second enhancement is an improvement in comScore?s enumeration survey methodology to better represent persons in cell-phone only households. The third and final enhancement is a new technique to account for cookie rejection in Safari browsers, for sites measured via comScore?s Unified Digital Measurement (UDM) methodology. Due to the effects of the changes to the August 2012 U.S. Video Metrix data, comScore advises caution when interpreting month-over-month trends.

In birds' development, researchers find diversity by the peck

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? It has long been known that diversity of form and function in birds' specialized beaks is abundant. Charles Darwin famously studied the finches on the Galapagos Islands, tying the morphology (shape) of various species' beaks to the types of seeds they ate. In 2010, a team of Harvard biologists and applied mathematicians showed that Darwin's finches all actually shared the same developmental pathways, using the same gene products, controlling just size and curvature, to create 14 very different beaks.

Now, expanding that work to a less closely related group of birds, the Caribbean bullfinches, that same team at Harvard has uncovered something exciting -- namely, that the molecular signals that produce those beak shapes show even more variation than is apparent on the surface. Not only can two very different beaks share the same developmental pathway, as in Darwin's finches, but two very different developmental pathways can produce exactly the same shaped beak.

"Most people assume that there's this flow of information from genes for development to an inevitable morphology," says principal investigator Arhat Abzhanov, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology (OEB). "Those beaks are very highly adaptive in their shapes and sizes, and extremely important for these birds. In Darwin's finches, even one millimeter of difference in proportion or size can mean life or death during difficult times. But can we look at it from a bioengineering perspective and say that in order to generate the exact same morphological shape, you actually require the same developmental process to build it? Our latest research suggests not."

The findings have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Caribbean bullfinches, geographic and genetic neighbors to Darwin's finches, are a group of three similar-looking species that represent two different branches of the evolutionary tree. These bullfinches have very strong bills that are all exactly the same geometric shape but slightly different sizes.

"They specialize in seeds that no one else can touch," explains Abzhanov. "You'd actually need a pair of pliers to crack these seeds yourself; it takes 300 to 400 Newtons of force, so that's a really nice niche if you can do that. But the question is, what developmental changes must have occurred to produce a specialized beak like that?"

A new and highly rigorous genomic analysis by coauthor Kevin J. Burns, a biologist at San Diego State University, has shown that among the three Caribbean bullfinch species, this crushing type of beak actually evolved twice, independently. Convergent evolution like this is common in nature, and very familiar to biologists. But understanding that phylogeny enabled Abzhanov, lead author Ricardo Mallarino (a former Ph.D. student in OEB at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences), and colleagues in applied mathematics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) to perform a series of mathematical and morphogenetic studies showing that the birds form those identical beaks in completely different ways. Such studies must, by their nature, be performed early in the embryonic stage of the birds' development, when the shape and tissue structure of the beak is determined by the interactions of various genes and proteins.

"In the small bullfinch you have almost a two-stage rocket system," says Abzhanov. "Cartilage takes you halfway, and then bone kicks in and delivers the beak to the right shape. Without either stage, you'll fail. In the larger bullfinches, the cartilage is not even employed, so it's like a single-stage rocket, but it's got this high-energy, synergistic interaction between two molecules that just takes the bone and drives its development straight to the right shape."

In embryos of the small bullfinch, Loxigilla noctis, the control genes used are Bmp4 and CaM, followed by TGF?IIr, ?-catenin, and Dkk3, the same combination used in Darwin's finches. Embryos of the larger bullfinches, L. violacea and L. portoricensis, use a novel combination of just Bmp4 and Ihh.

"Importantly," Abzhanov says, "despite the fact that these birds are using different systems, they end up with the same shape beak, and a different shape beak from Darwin's finches. So that reveals a surprising amount of flexibility in both the shapes and the molecular interactions that support them."

The finding offers new insight into the ways birds -- the largest and most diverse group of land vertebrates -- have managed to adaptively fill so many different ecological niches.

"It is possible that even if the beak shape doesn't change over time, the program that builds it does," explains Abzhanov. "For evolution, the main thing that matters for selection is what the beak actually looks like at the end, or specifically what it can do. The multiple ways to build that beak can be continually changing, provided they deliver the same results. That flexibility by itself could be a good vehicle for eventually developing novel shapes, because the developmental program is not frozen."

Following a standard process in studies of developmental biology, Abzhanov's team began with measurements of the morphological differences between species, followed by observations of gene expression in bullfinch embryos and functional experiments using chicken embryos. Along the way, mathematical models helped the team to quantify and categorize the beak shapes they were seeing.

"We used geometric morphometric analysis, looking at these beaks as curves," says coauthor Michael Brenner, Glover Professor of Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics at SEAS and Harvard College Professor. "The beak shapes would turn into contours, contours were digitized into curvatures, and curvatures were turned into representative mathematical formulas. This provided our biology colleagues with an unbiased way of determining which of the different species had beak shapes that were identical up to scaling transformations, and which were in a completely different group."

In order to observe gene expression in the developing bullfinch embryos, Mallarino and a team of undergraduate field assistants had to collect eggs from wild nests in the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and Puerto Rico. The birds breed in dome-shaped nests with small side entrances, often in the tops of tall cacti. In accordance with strict fieldwork regulations, Mallarino's team collected only every third egg laid, which required them to return to the nests daily, climbing dozens of trees and cacti to carefully label every new egg. Laden with radios, notebooks, markers, heavy ladders, and a special foam crate for the delicate eggs, the team ventured into remote field sites at the crack of dawn and returned to camp before noon to incubate those they collected.

"They're much more fragile than a chicken egg, and extremely small," says Mallarino. "We just walk very carefully."

"It's a big logistical operation," he adds. "It's five months of really, really hard work under the sun in crazy conditions, but when it works it's really rewarding. At day 6 or 7 you have a perfect, live embryo with a beak beginning to form, and you can learn so much about it."

The next step in this work is to widen the lens yet again and compare the morphological development of a broader group of birds.

"In time, hopefully we'll see how the great diversity that you see among all these highly adaptive bird beaks may actually evolve at the genetic level," says Mallarino. "That's the greater challenge."

In addition to Abzhanov, Mallarino, and Brenner, coauthors included Otger Camp?s, a former postdoctoral associate at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS); Joerg A. Fritz, a graduate student in applied mathematics at SEAS; and Olivia G. Weeks, a graduate student in organismic and evolutionary biology at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

This work was supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation, as well as the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard and the National Institutes of Health.
