Vegan Recipe: Lucky Greens and Blackeyes - Eat Drink Better

eating veganBlackeyed Peas

Long associated with luck and prosperity, no New Year?s celebration is complete without the mighty blackeyed pea!?Sadly, though, this Southern custom?rarely brings?good fortune to the?porcine folk whose hocks often wind up in traditional cuisine. This recipe offers savory holiday deliciousness, but?without chopping off anyone?s ankles ? and your?slow cooker?does most of the work, while you celebrate with family and friends.?What?great way to kick off?the New Year!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried blackeyed peas (about 2-1/2 to 3 cups after soaking)
  • 1 medium or large yellow onion, chopped
  • 4 large or 5 medium garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves (not ground thyme)
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter or refined coconut oil, melted
  • 3 cups seasoned vegetable broth (such as Better Than Boullion No-Chicken Base)
  • 1 bunch mustard greens (or turnip greens or kale),?washed well,?ribs removed,?and chopped or torn into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring, to taste
  • 1/3 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 to 2?teaspoons Bragg?s Liquid Aminos or organic soy sauce (amount varies, depending on the broth you use)
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco or Louisiana hot sauce

Directions

Soak blackeyed peas overnight, or quick-soak according to package directions.

Drain and rinse the soaked blackeyes. Combine blackeyed peas, onion, garlic, thyme, bay leaves, Old Bay seasoning, and black pepper in your slow cooker. Stir in the melted vegan butter or coconut oil?and broth; the liquid should cover the blackeyes by about 1? to 1-1/2?. Splash in a bit more broth if needed (depending on the size of your slow cooker).

Cook on high heat for 1-1/2 hours.

After 1-1/2 hours, stir?in greens?a handful at a time, giving each bunch?a moment?to wilt before adding more. Cook for another 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours on high, until blackeyes are as done as you like them. To me, this dish works best when the?blackeyes and greens?are both?well?past al dente ??pretty soft, but not overshooting into mushy.

When you?re happy with the texture of the blackeyes and greens, stir in the liquid smoke, nutritional yeast, red wine vinegar, Bragg?s or organic soy sauce, and hot sauce. I personally recommend?fairly generous sprinklings of the hot sauce, Old Bay, and smoke flavoring!

Turn?the slow cooker heat?to low, to keep the greens and blackeyes warm for second helpings. Remove bay leaves, serve with sweet cornbread, and enjoy!

Production Notes

Makes about 6 large servings; preparation time: soak time plus 30 minutes; cooking time: 4 to 5 hrs.

This recipe works well as a make-ahead dish:?prep your?greens, soak the peas, and chop your garlic and onion the day before. Add the?spices and such on cooking day; and then just sit back and enjoy spending time with friends and family, while your slow cooker whips up a delicious dinner to start the year off right!

Happy New Year!

If cut, fiscal deal will pale against expectations

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top Senate negotiators on the effort to prevent the government from going over the "fiscal cliff" offered a pessimistic assessment Sunday barely 24 hours before a deadline to avert tax hikes on virtually every worker.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said he's yet to receive a response to an offer he made on Saturday evening to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., the top Democratic negotiator. The Kentucky Republican said he's reached out to Vice President Joe Biden in hopes of breaking the impasse.

Despite indications of progress in the negotiations, Democrats said Republicans were proposing to slow future cost of living increases for Social Security recipients as part of a compromise to avoid the cliff. Democrats rejected the idea. Republicans declined to confirm the assertion ? and one GOP official disputed it ? but noted that President Barack Obama said in a television interview broadcast earlier in the day he had advanced such a proposal in earlier talks with Republicans.

"I'm concerned with the lack of urgency here. There's far too much at stake," McConnell said. "There is no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point ? the sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest or courage to close the deal."

Reid said he has been trying to come up with a counteroffer but has been unable to do so. He said he's been in frequent contact with Obama, who in the interview blamed Republicans for putting the nation's shaky economy at risk.

The pessimistic turn came as the House and Senate returned to the Capitol for a rare Sunday session. The fate of the negotiations remained in doubt, two days before the beginning of a new year that would trigger across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts that leaders in both parties have said they want to avoid.

Reid said he remains "cautiously optimistic" but reiterated that any agreement would not include the less generous inflation adjustment for Social Security.

"We have been talking to the Republicans ever since the election was over," Obama said in the interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that aired Sunday. "They have had trouble saying yes to a number of repeated offers."

McConnell and Reid were hoping for a deal that would prevent higher taxes for most Americans while letting rates rise at higher income levels, although the precise point at which that would occur was a major sticking point.

Also at issue were the estate tax, taxes on investment income and dividends, continued benefits for the long-term unemployed and a pending 27.5 percent cut in payment levels for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

Obama, in the NBC interview, said that while he had been "modestly optimistic" late last week, "we don't yet see an agreement."

As the Senate opened a rare Sunday session, Chaplain Barry Black offered a timely prayer for lawmakers.

"Lord show them the right thing to do and give them the courage to do it," Black said. "Look with favor on our nation and save us from self-inflicted wounds."

Senate negotiators were haggling over what threshold of income to set as the demarcation between current tax rates and higher tax rates. They were negotiating over estate limits and tax levels, how to extend unemployment benefits, how to prevent cuts in Medicare payments to doctors and how to keep a minimum income tax payment designed for the rich from hitting about 28 million middle class taxpayers.

Obama pressed lawmakers to start where both sides say they agree ? sparing middle-class families from looming tax hikes.

"If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the fiscal cliff. It avoids the worst outcomes. And we're then going to have some tough negotiations in terms of how we continue to reduce the deficit, grow the economy, create jobs," Obama said in the NBC interview.

Gone, however, is the talk of a grand deal that would tackle broad spending and revenue demands and set the nation on a course to lower deficits. Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner were once a couple hundred billion dollars apart of a deal that would have reduced the deficit by more than $2 trillion over ten years.

Republicans have complained that Obama has demanded too much in tax revenue and hasn't proposed sufficient cuts or savings in the nation's massive health care programs.

Obama upped the pressure on Republicans to negotiate a fiscal deal, arguing that GOP leaders have rejected his past attempts to strike a bigger and more comprehensive bargain.

"The offers that I've made to them have been so fair that a lot of Democrats get mad at me," Obama said.

Boehner disagreed, saying Sunday that the president had been unwilling to agree to anything "that would require him to stand up to his own party."

Don Stewart, a spokesman for McConnell, said Sunday: "While the president was taping those discordant remarks yesterday, Sen. McConnell was in the office working to bring Republicans and Democrats together on a solution."

The trimmed ambitions of today are a far cry from the upbeat bipartisan rhetoric of just six weeks ago, when the leadership of Congress went to the White House to set the stage for negotiations to come.

"I outlined a framework that deals with reforming our tax code and reforming our spending," Boehner said as the leaders gathered on the White House driveway on Nov. 16.

"We understand that it has to be about cuts, it has to be about revenue, it has to be about growth, it has to be about the future," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said at the time. "I feel confident that a solution may be in sight."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the 2.1 million Americans whose extended unemployment benefits ran out on Saturday are already feeling the pain of Congress' inaction.

"From this point on, it's lose-lose. My big worry is a contraction of the economy, the loss of jobs, which could be well over 2 million in addition to the people already on unemployment. I think contraction of the economy would be just terrible for this nation. I think we need a deal, we should do a deal," Feinstein said on "Fox News Sunday."

But the deal was not meant to settle other outstanding issues, including more than $1 trillion in cuts over 10 years, divided equally between the Pentagon and other government spending. The deal also would not address an extension of the nation's borrowing limit, which the government is on track to reach any day but which the Treasury can put off through accounting measures for about two months.

That means Obama and the Congress are already on a new collision path. Republicans say they intend to use the debt ceiling as leverage to extract more spending cuts from the president. Obama has been adamant that unlike 2011, when the country came close to defaulting on its debts, he will not yield to those Republican demands.

Lawmakers have until the new Congress convenes to pass any compromise, and even the calendar mattered. Democrats said they had been told House Republicans might reject a deal until after Jan. 1, to avoid a vote to raise taxes before they had technically gone up, and then vote to cut taxes after they had risen.

Game over for PlayStation 2 in Japan

Quote:

Sony has discontinued the PlayStation 2 in Japan, says a report, nearly 13 years after the device's introduction.

Famitsu broke the news that Sony halted Japanese production of PlayStation 2 hardware in its home country, but the blog also noted that the company plans to continue developing and selling games for the video game console. We've reached out to Sony Computer Entertainment America for more information about future PS2 plans in the U.S. -- check back later for a response.

Mark Schlabach / Northern Illinois isn't the first unlikely team to reach a BCS game - college football

- You could say Alabama is playing for its place in history. With a victory in the Discover BCS National Championship Game, the Tide can become the sport's first back-to-back consensus national champion since Nebraska in 1994-95, as well as the first school to win three national titles in the BCS era (the Tide also won in 2009).

- Fourteen consecutive top-five finishes. Two national championships. The record for most wins in a decade. If we are going to talk about college football dynasties, Mark Schlabach writes, then Florida State of the 1990s has to be on the list.

- Alabama and Notre Dame are two of the most legendary programs which to add to their resumes with another national title on January 7th.

Texas builds 'hurricane domes' for double-duty

EDNA, Texas (AP) ? Texas is building specially designed "hurricane domes" along its Gulf Coast that will offer shelter during major storms and serve the rest of the time as gyms or community centers.

The proposed 28 domes are part of the Texas Safe Shelter Initiative, created to protect sick and elderly residents who can't evacuate ahead of a hurricane. First-responders will also be able to use the facilities, which are being funded mostly by the federal government.

The school district in the town of Edna, about 100 miles southwest of Houston, is building a hurricane dome that will be nearly 20,000 square feet and able to withstand winds up to 200 mph.

When not needed for a storm, it will be used mainly as a high school gym.

Miley Cyrus And Lena Dunham Show Off Their Christmas Style And More Tweets Of The Week (PHOTOS)

This week, the Twittersphere was a great place to learn some awesome tidbits about the lives of the fashionable (and the fashionably-challenged). Even though over the holidays many celebrities were hibernating (or on vacation in Mexico) they still managed to find time to tweet.

We got to see a Christmas throwback pic from Lena Dunham, and Miley Cyrus rocked a Santa beard with her pajamas (which of course are leopard print ). Thankfully, it wasn't a repeat of her "Christmas Creampies" outfit.

Take a look at the tweets below and see more of our favorite Twitter moments:

Cholesterol drug shows promise in fighting effects of malaria

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers have discovered that adding lovastatin, a widely used cholesterol-lowering drug, to traditional antimalarial treatment decreases neuroinflammation and protects against cognitive impairment in a mouse model of cerebral malaria. Although there are differences between mouse models of cerebral malaria and human disease, these new findings indicate that statins are worthy of consideration in clinical trials of cerebral malaria, according to an article published in the Dec. 27 issue of PLOS Pathogens.

Malaria, a parasitic infection that is transmitted to humans by the female Anopheles mosquito, is one of the leading infectious diseases worldwide. Cerebral malaria is a severe, potentially fatal neurologic complication of infection by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Studies of children with cerebral malaria show that cognitive deficits, such as impaired memory, learning, language, and mathematical abilities, persist in many survivors long after the infection itself is cured.

"Over 500,000 children develop cerebral malaria each year in sub-Saharan Africa, and persistent cognitive dysfunction in survivors is not only a major public health concern, but also a significant socioeconomic burden," says Guy Zimmerman M.D., associate chair for research in the Department of Medicine at the University of Utah and senior co-author on the study. "There is an urgent and unmet medical need for therapies that treat or prevent cognitive impairment in cerebral malaria."

Statins, a class of drugs best known for their ability to lower cholesterol, have also been shown to be active in modulating a variety of immune system responses. In their research, Zimmerman and his Brazilian colleagues evaluated the effect of statins in a mouse model of cerebral malaria. The researchers found that adding a drug called lovastatin to traditional antimalarial therapy prevented cognitive dysfunction in mice infected with cerebral malaria. They discovered that addition of lovastatin decreased white blood cell accumulation and leakiness in blood vessels in the brain. Lovastatin also reduced production of damaging oxygen-containing molecules and other factors that promote inflammation.

"The molecular mechanisms that give rise to cerebral malaria and subsequent cognitive dysfunction are not yet known," says Zimmerman. "However, the fact that statin treatment decreases both injurious blood vessel inflammation and cognitive dysfunction suggests that a combination of vascular and inflammatory triggers leads to cerebral pathology and intellectual deficits."

Zimmerman and his colleagues also studied lovastatin in an experimental model of bacterial sepsis, a severe whole-body inflammatory state that can also lead to cognitive impairment. They found that lovastatin also prevented cognitive impairment after bacterial sepsis.

"Our findings are exciting because the clinical implications extend beyond cerebral malaria to other severe systemic inflammatory syndromes complicated by brain involvement," says Zimmerman. "We believe our observations are the first experimental evidence to support the possibility of using statins to reduce cognitive impairment in critically ill patients."

This study is the latest result of a long-term collaboration between Zimmerman and Dr. Hugo Castro-Faria-Neto and his group at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a Brazilian research institute dedicated to the study, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. This collaboration began when Dr. Castro-Faria-Neto was a visiting scientist at the University of Utah. Future research will focus on additional investigation into the molecular mechanisms of cerebral malaria and the responses of key immune cells to malaria toxins, as well as on studies of the systemic inflammatory component of malaria in human patients.

? How to Ride a Motorcycle

The right hand is responsible for two key functions in motorcycling: acceleration and braking. By turning the handle towards you (if your wrist moves down), you apply gas (or ?gas? engine.) A little twist goes a long way, so be gentle with this command from the engine can cause sudden instability, or even accidental wheelies. The right hand also controls the front brakes (as seen in the upper half of the photo.) Pull the lever applies the front brakes, and smoothness is crucial here: pull the lever too hard, and the front brakes can block, causing the bike to skid, which could go ahead and crash. While most bikes are able to stop using a two-finger technique (as seen on the picture above), some require the whole hand wrapped around the lever. Use the technique that works best with your bike.

The right foot operates the rear brake (shown in the bottom half of the photo split-screen), but you should know that when the front brakes are in use, the rear becomes less effective (because the weight transfers to forward during braking.) Rear brake is most useful in situations reduced traction and low speed maneuvers, and if the rear brake is sometimes more effective on cruisers (because they carry a large part of their weight on the rear wheel), front brakes are usually the most effective way to stop a motorcycle. The clutch lever is in front of the left grip. Most sport bikes requires only two fingers functioning (photo above), during a tour, cruise and other types of motorcycles often need the whole hand to grab the lever (photo below).

Consider the clutch as a means to connect and disconnect the motor of the transmission. When you press the clutch, you are actually putting the bike in neutral (even if the shifter is in gear.) When you let go, allowing the engine to turn the transmission and, if the motorcycle is running, the rear wheel. Is to pull the clutch with your left hand and do it slowly and gradually, imagine that it is a dimmer switch, rather than an ?On-Off?, and you will be able to engage gears much more smoothly. Motorcycles go differently than cars. Although they operate on the same principle, the changes of motorcycles are executed by the movement of a lever up or down with the left foot. A vast majority of motorcycles incorporate this model, which is called ?1 down, 5 up.? Find neutral with your left foot will take some time getting used to, and while clicking the shifter back and forth.

You will be looking for the green ?N? light on the gauges. While some bikes can be moved without using the clutch, make it a habit to use the clutch every time you pass. The bike will not start if the circuit breaker is in the ?on? position, flip it before turning the key (the circuit breaker is usually a red rocker switch operated by the right thumb, as seen in half top of the photo.) now, turn the key to position ?ignition? position, which is generally to the right (as seen in the lower half of the picture.) most bikes perform a self-test to ensure that the gauges are operational and each witness might involve going off like a Christmas tree. If you see the speedometer and / or tachometer (which measures the speed of the motor) pin itself and return to zero, do not worry ? this is normal. When the self-test is complete, make sure that you are neutral (double-check that the green ?N? is lit.)

From babies to toddlers - the twins are growing fast ? Larger Family ...

?

Libby and Anna are now the grand old age of 14 months. ?Well, 14 months and two days to be precise.

When they were born Libby weighed in a whole 10 ounces more than Anna. ?Looking back at the photos Anna looked comparatively skeletal to Libby, with Libby affectionately described as being the ?heftier? of the two according to my consultant ? as hefty as a 5lb 10oz baby can be, I guess!

As they make the transition from babyhood to toddlerhood I sit in awe and wonder at their progress. ?It is always magical to see your child grow and change and learn new things before your eyes but with twins it?s different. ?You get the bonus of watching two siblings the same age learn to interact and discover the world together.

In the last two weeks their interaction with each other has grown greatly. ?Where when they were younger babies they were somewhat oblivious to one another, they now seem to have realised that there is someone else who ?gets it? the way they do. ?And more to the point, if they join forces together they can fight against those of us that don?t ?get it? the same way.

They have started to babble together ? to each other. ?Libby, born a minute before Anna, has maintained the position of the caring older sister. ?We have noticed that she likes to share things with Anna, breaking off a piece of her bread or taking her dummy out of her own mouth to shove into Anna?s, albeit for mere seconds.

Anna is more of a prima donna it seems. ?She loves her food. ?Loves it. ?And she loves everyone elses food. ?For one so diddy it has become apparent that she can hold a lot of food within her tiny body. ?She makes her displeasure known if her food runs out or if someone else has something she wants. ?Or if lunch isn?t prepared quickly enough.

Libby is a chatterer. ?Libby has been trying to get the hang of walking, moving herself through the kitchen whilst holding onto the backs of the dining chairs, with wobbly legs and voicing a?Whoa! Oo-ooh! rather like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Libby loves cuddling dolls and poking them in the eye.

Anna is a noisy chatterer with a husky little voice. ?She has a tiny but fierce temper but loves the camera, posing on cue as soon as she detects that she may be caught on film. ?When they were younger babies Libby got the hang of moving about and crawling first. ?This meant that if Anna was lying on the floor or in their shared cot, Libby would often move over to her, either squishing her or taking her bottle from her. ?Anna is now getting her own back.

Both know several words in sign language and Libby says a few words herself too. ?Despite Anna looking the daintier, more delicate of the two it is clear that she isn?t. ?She can hold her own, and has earned herself the nickname ?Shrek? thanks to hear forceful, windy performances.

Libby is rather more ladylike, at times becoming quite coy and shy.

Libby likes to push Anna around on the ride-ons ? the ride-ons being the new favourite toys of the moment.

Both are becoming climbers. ?The stairs have been climbed up and tumbled down several times ? the gate having broken thanks to over-eager young boys crashing their way through. ?The makeshift blockade that Mike set up lasted for no longer than two minutes when, once Libby realised she alone couldn?t move it, waited for Anna to come along. ?Libby pushed against the right side of the box and Anna on the left and together they moved it out of way. ?When they worked it out once they teamed up without hesitation over and over and over again.

Watching them work things out and interact is wonderful. ? I?m finding it quite amazing at how, despite a seeming lack of communication, there are no barriers to what they can understand from each other.

I have to admit though that I do wonder how this will grow as their communication does. ?I?ve a feeling we may be seeing a little mischief from these two, don?t you?

?

'No, I haven't seen Anna anywhere!'

?

'Hey Libby! Do you think they saw me?' 'I'm sure they didn't. I'll swing my dummy around to distract them - just to be sure!'

?

'Oh come on! Look at my innocent face! Do you really think I'd be up to anything...?'

?

'...but if you find the boys bound behind the sofa just remember they messed with the wrong sisters!'

?

?

FTC to delay Google anti-trust probe decision: source

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which had been expected to wrap up an anti-trust probe into Google within days, will now delay its decision for weeks, a source said on Tuesday.

Google has been accused of giving competitors in lucrative areas like travel a lower ranking in search results, thus making it harder for their customers to find them. Google has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz had hoped to wrap up the long-running investigation this month.

Talk of a potential settlement in recent days had suggested Google would emerge from the more than two-year probe with little more than a slap on the wrist from the commission.

The delay, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, came after the European Union took a hard line with the search engine giant on Tuesday in a parallel investigation.

The EU's antitrust chief, Joaquin Almunia, gave Google a month to come up with detailed proposals to resolve a two-year investigation into complaints that it used its power to block rivals, including Microsoft.

The European Commission has been examining informal settlement proposals from Google since July but has not sought feedback from the complainants, suggesting it is not convinced by what Google has put on the table so far.

Google's critics have accused it of a long list of wrongdoing - everything from putting its own products high up in search results to bring them business to "scraping" reviews of hotels and restaurants from other sites for its own products.

Google had reportedly been prepared to make some changes to its business practices to secure an end to the FTC investigation but had balked at allowing regulators to interfere with its search algorithm. The company was also apparently prepared to make concessions on certain patent infringement lawsuits.

Invasive plant species may harm native grasslands by changing soil composition

Dec. 18, 2012 ? The future landscape of the American Midwest could look a lot like the past -- covered in native grasslands rather than agricultural crops. This is not a return to the past, however, but a future that could depend on grasslands for biofuels, grazing systems, carbon sequestration, and other ecosystem services. A major threat to this ecosystem is an old one -- weeds and their influence on the soil.

According to a study in the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management, when invasive plants spread, they can leave behind a "legacy" of alteration in the native soil. Even after an invading species has been controlled, its effects can inhibit the regrowth of native plant species. The causes of this process are still being investigated and may involve changes in soil food webs, soil microbial communities, and mutualistic fungi.

In the study, researchers tested soil conditions for changes in composition after three growth cycles of invasive plant species. Researchers looked for changes in colonization rates, diversity, and composition of arbuscular-mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Three exotic plant species -- crested wheatgrass, smooth brome, and leafy spurge -- were tested in a glasshouse experiment. These plants, all characterized as strong invaders, were grown in native soil collected from North Dakota grasslands. Native species, including western wheatgrass, little bluestem, and blue gramma, were also grown, and after three growth cycles, soil composition was compared among these treatments.

The findings of this study showed that (1) invasive species changed the composition of AMF communities in seedling roots of native grassland species, and (2) invasive species were less colonized by AMF, forming fewer associations than native grassland species. These findings suggest that the ecological differences in how these native and invasive plants interact with soil may be a factor in this legacy effect. While market and policy demands might lead to a native grasslands agro-ecosystem, invasive plants species could derail its establishment. Weed management must be a component of any such ecosystem, so that it is possible to establish grasslands that are useful and profitable.

Density of invasive reed, Phragmites australis, mapped in Great Lakes

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Phragmites australis, an invasive species of plant called common reed, grows rapidly into dense stands of tall plants that pose an extreme threat to Great Lakes coastal wetlands. Early treatment is the key to controlling Phragmites.

But how can these invasive reeds be eradicated before they take over their environment if we don't know where they are?

Now we do know, thanks to scientists from Michigan Technological University's Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), the US Geological Survey (USGS), Boston College and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). They mapped the US coastline of all five Great Lakes using satellite technologies. Combined with field studies along those coastlines to confirm the satellite data, the map shows the locations of large stands of the invasive Phragmites located within 6.2 miles of the water's edge.

The results of their three-year study are reported in a special issue of the Journal of Great Lakes Research focusing on remote sensing.

The Phragmites map is the first of its kind. Lead author Laura Bourgeau-Chavez, a research scientist at MTRI in Ann Arbor, Mich., calls it "a highly accurate data set that will allow national, regional and local managers to visualize the extent of Phragmites invasion in the Great Lakes and strategically plan efforts to manage existing populations and minimize new colonization."

Why is invasive Phragmites such a threat? The invasive form can out-compete native wetland plants for resources, quickly dominating wetlands. It displaces native vegetation and reduces the quality of the habitat, the scientists say, altering nutrients in the soil and water, decreasing the diversity of animals and plants that normally live there, increasing air temperatures, drying wetland soils and trapping sediments. Mature stands of Phragmites often reach 16-feet tall, interfering with shoreline views, which can lower property values.

Using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), the researchers were able to use the longer wavelengths of SAR (approximately 23 centimeters) to distinguish between high biomass invasive Phragmites and other types of wetland vegetation. It also helped them detect flooding under a canopy of plants. For the entire Great Lakes basin, the overall accuracy of the resulting map was 87 percent.

To validate their classification of the satellite data, similar information was collected by hand at random sites throughout the coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes during 2010 and 2011. By the end of 2011, a total of almost 1,200 half-acre field sites had been checked.

Lakes Huron and Erie turned out to have the greatest amount of invasive Phragmites. The project identified a smaller extent of Phragmites in Lake Michigan but only a few stands in Lake Ontario and almost none in Lake Superior.

Although other factors may be at play, it appears that climate is helping determine the northward range of Phragmites. Changing climate conditions, therefore, may have broad impacts on the distribution of Phragmites. With the developed dataset, scientists can effectively model future range extension and target control efforts. The methods developed in the project can also be used to re-map targeted areas in the future.

The Canadian coastlines of the Great Lakes were not included in this study due to financial constraints. In the future, the researchers hope to extend their mapping to the Canadian shores and further into the landscape than the current 6.2 miles.

The research project was funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through a cooperative agreement with the USGS Great Lakes Science Center and USFWS.

Syria "genuinely worried" extremists could get chemical weapons

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Syria is "genuinely worried" that some countries might equip extremist groups with chemical weapons and then claim they were used by the Syrian government, the country's U.N. envoy said in a letter to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council.

Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari also accused the U.S. government of supporting "terrorists" in Syria and waging a campaign that claims Syria could use chemical weapons in the 20-month-old civil war that has killed at least 40,000 people.

The United States says it is sending only humanitarian aid and nonlethal assistance to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's opponents, but acknowledges some allies are arming the rebels.

Assad's government accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, the United States and other Western governments of supporting and arming the rebels, an allegation the governments deny.

"We have repeatedly stated publicly and through diplomatic channels that Syria will not under any circumstances use any chemical weapons that it may have, because it is defending its people from terrorists backed by well-known states, at the forefront of which is the United States of America," Ja'afari said.

"We are genuinely worried that certain states that support terrorism and terrorists could provide the armed terrorist groups with chemical weapons, and then claim they had been used by the Syrian Government," he wrote in the letter which was dated December 8 but made public on Monday.

Damascus has accused Western powers of backing what it says is a Sunni Islamist "terrorist" campaign to topple Assad, a member of the minority Alawite sect affiliated with Shi'ite Islam.

It has said that U.S. and European concerns about Assad's forces possibly resorting to chemical weapons could serve as a pretext for preparing military intervention. Western military experts say Syria has four suspected chemical weapons sites, and it can produce chemical weapons agents including mustard gas and sarin, and possibly also VX nerve agent.

"States such as the United States of America that have used chemical and similar weapons are in no position to launch such a campaign, particularly because, in 2003, they used the pretext of Iraq having weapons of mass destruction in order to justify their invasion and occupation," Ja'afari wrote.

"Since the issue was raised, Syria has stated countless times that it will not under any circumstances use any chemical weapons that it may have against its own people," he said. "The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic warns that the terrorist groups could use those weapons against the Syrian people."

Ban expressed alarm on Sunday at the worsening violence in Syria, including the reported mass killing of Alawites and alleged firing of long-range missiles on Syrian territory, Ban's spokesman said.

He spoke to Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem on Monday morning to voice his particular concern over reports of Syrian fighter jets bombing the Palestinian Yarmouk camp in Damascus on Sunday, killing at least 25 people.

The foreign minister told Ban that Palestinians should not offer "shelter or assistance to terrorist groups" in the Yarmouk refugee camp, state television said on Monday.

The 15-member U.N. Security Council has been incapable of taking any meaningful action in the conflict. Veto powers Russia and China refuse to condemn Assad or support sanctions.

What Did Kids Read Before Hans Christian Andersen?

A 1914 illustration of 'Thumbelina' from an English translation of Hans Christian Anderson's tales.

A 1914 illustration of "Thumbelina" from an English translation of Hans Christian Anderson's tales

Courtesy Wikimedia Commons.

Danish historian Esben Brage has discovered a previously unknown story written by Hans Christian Andersen, the 19th-century author responsible for such children's classics as "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and "The Princess and the Pea." Kids still read Andersen's oeuvre, but very few pre-Andersen children's stories remain popular. What did children read before the era of Hans Christian Andersen?

Epic poems, religious literature, romances, and Aesop. Scholars argue over when children's literature?that is, books written exclusively for and read exclusively by children?came into existence. But it's largely a debate over definitions. Even in ancient times, certain types of stories were considered appropriate for children. Archaeologists have unearthed a children's version of the labors of Hercules from the third century written in simple language with large, spaced-out text and color pictures of the lions and the mythical hero. Greek and Roman teachers selected passages from Homer or Virgil that were learner-friendly. And there was always Aesop, the (possibly fictitious) freed slave who supposedly composed fables to illustrate a moral or ethical message. He didn't write his works down, and we'll never know whether children were his intended audience. We do know, however, that Aesop's fables were a crucial part of the education of a Greek or Roman child. Such eminent writers as Plato and Aristophanes referenced Aesop, obviously expecting that their audiences would have come across the fables during their formative years.

The Middle Ages weren't a particularly fruitful time for kiddie lit. In Europe, the Christian majority adjusted pagan fables to give them a Christian bent. The moral statements that ended many of Aesop's fables, for example, came to include commands from God, and some of the relationships in the stories were altered to make them resemble biblical stories like Cain and Abel or the prodigal son. The fables of Avianus were read to children as well, and scholars have found versions with childlike scribblings in the margins. Medieval children also read the Psalms and the Lives of the Saints?not exactly kids' fare, as we think of it today.

The printing press was as much of a boon to young readers as it was to adults. When the press came to England in the 15th century, some of the first books published were read by younger audiences. In addition to Aesop's fables, which were still going strong, English children read the tales of Reynard, a talking red fox that delighted his fans by outsmarting the wealthy and powerful. English kids also read adventure books, particularly the stories of Guy of Warwick, who battled dragons and other beasts, and medieval knight Sir Gowther.

It's still not clear, however, whether characters like Reynard were truly for children. Adults also read the stories, and no one knows whether the people who dreamed up the tales had kids in mind. Children's literature?that is, books printed specifically for children or for parents to read to children?may not have existed in English until the 1740s, when John Newbery launched his publishing business. A Little Pretty Pocket Book, which, according to some, was the first true piece of dedicated children's literature, was an enormous success. It had poems and songs and even came with a ball or pin cushion. (Newbery was ahead of his time in marketing as well as in children's publishing.) Still, Hans Christian Andersen?whom contemporaries described as having the attitude of a young child throughout his life?was part of a golden age of children's literature that has yet to be matched.

Cold winter: Hamilton is latest loss for Rangers

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:16 p.m. ET Dec. 13, 2012

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Rangers general manager Jon Daniels was talking before lunch Thursday about the team still wanting to re-sign Josh Hamilton.

Just more than an hour later, after getting a call from Hamilton's agent, Daniels was telling the same group of reporters that the five-time All-Star slugger and 2010 AL MVP had agreed to a deal with the AL West rival Los Angeles Angels.

So far, it has been that kind of offseason for Texas.

Zack Greinke, the top free-agent pitcher also targeted by the Rangers, chose the Los Angeles Dodgers instead last weekend.

"Now we go back and look at some of our other options," Daniels said after getting word that Hamilton was suddenly gone, too.

"We've talked all along that we want to play some of our own guys. We were hoping to do it alongside Josh, and I liked the idea of our young players playing with some of our established guys," the GM said. "We still have a very good nucleus, but it is what it is. He's a big part of the club the last few years, and now he's on the other side."

All-Star right-hander James Shields, another pitcher Texas likely would have been interested in pursuing in a trade, was instead dealt from Tampa Bay to Kansas City. And the Arizona Diamondbacks have said now that it's "highly unlikely" they will deal young slugging outfielder Justin Upton after a three-team trade this week that got the Diamondbacks a desired shortstop.

The Rangers have been to the playoffs three consecutive seasons, but last year dropped a winner-take-all wild-card game at home to Baltimore after losing the division title to Oakland on the last day of the regular season. They went to the previous two World Series.

When Rangers president Nolan Ryan was asked Thursday to assess the offseason so far, he responded, "It hasn't probably gone as we had hoped to this point."

And that was before agent Michael Moye called the Rangers with Hamilton's decision.

"We still feel like we have a good ballclub and we feel like we're in a good position," Ryan said. "So I don't think that we're feeling like any pressure to go out and make something happen."

Michael Young, the longest-tenured player in Texas with 12 seasons, was traded to Philadelphia last week for two young relievers. Two Rangers free agents, catcher Mike Napoli and reliever Koji Uehara, have reached agreements with Boston.

With Young and Napoli gone, the Rangers could be ready to give rookie infielder Jurickson Profar a chance. One possible scenario is for Profar to take over at second base and Ian Kinsler to switch to first base - where Young and Napoli split some time.

"There are different ways that we can go," Daniels said about Kinsler in his initial talk Thursday with reporters. "But there's a reasonable chance we go that way and ask him to move to first."

Profar turns 20 in February, the same age shortstop Elvis Andrus was when he made his major league debut in 2009 after never playing above the Double-A level. Profar was called up by the Rangers at the end of last season, playing second base and shortstop in his nine games.

The Rangers could also find more playing time for another top prospect, infielder Mike Olt, who was hurt while spending the last two months of the season in the majors.

Gold Glove third baseman Adrian Beltre has three years left on his deal from when he was the big free-agent addition two years ago.

With Hamilton gone, the Rangers still have Nelson Cruz in right field and David Murphy in left. Craig Gentry and Leonys Martin could possibly platoon in center.

"We like our guys, we like our club," Daniels said. "Is there room to improve? Absolutely. We don't want to do it as to overreact and do something for the wrong reasons. ... We're trying to make good baseball decisions, give (manager Ron Washington) and the team the best chance we can headed into the year."

Yu Darvish, the headline addition from Japan last winter, heads up the rotation after an impressive All-Star transition to the majors. There is also All-Star left-hander Matt Harrison, lefty Derek Holland and Alexi Ogando, going back to the rotation after a season in the bullpen following his All-Star season as a starter in 2010.

Colby Lewis and Neftali Feliz, two other potential starters, will begin next season still recovering from elbow surgery. Texas could fill the gap by letting young guys compete for a rotation spot.

"We feel that when you look at our pitching staff, we're going into spring training with some experienced guys that we have a real feel for," Ryan said. "We're always looking to improve the pitching. We've tried to do some things that haven't worked out this winter so far, so we'll keep grinding away with it."

But what if the Rangers aren't able to add another starting pitcher?

"If we had to go to spring training with the staff we have," Ryan said, "yeah, I'd be comfortable with it."

Robbery sparks epic chase, college lockdown

By NBCLosAngeles.com and wire reports

LOS ANGELES -- A violent pawn shop robbery on Wednesday sparked a police chase across three California counties, a carjacking, an eight-hour lockdown for thousands of college students and staff, and the arrest of three suspects, including one within sight of Los Angeles' police chief at a charity event.

Two suspects remained at large early Thursday but the lockdown at California State University, Fullerton ended at 12:10 a.m. local time (3:10 a.m. ET).

The chase began after five men wearing ski masks and armed with handguns robbed at pawn shop in Moreno Valley at about 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET), shooting an employee of the store.

The clerk was shot four times and underwent surgery at?Riverside County Regional Medical Center, where he was in a critical but stable condition on Wednesday night.

Pawn shop clerk shot 4 times in robbery that sparked pursuits, campus lockdown

California Highway Patrol officers responded to a call describing the suspect vehicle and followed it to Fullerton.

At 3:47 p.m., the pursuit ended after the car exited the Orange (57) Freeway and stopped after it was involved in a minor collision in front of the university campus, Fullerton police Sgt. Jeff Stuart said at a news conference.

Nearly 10,000 students were at the university preparing for next week's finals when two men ran onto campus, where one was immediately taken into custody. The other man fled and was seen going into the school?s Mihaylo Hall, where business and economics are taught, Stuart said.

The school activated the lockdown at about 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET), sending a text to students telling them to stay where they were, The Associated Press reported.

The three other men headed southbound from campus. One was taken into custody, and another carjacked a vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed chase. The driver blew through several stop signs and red lights in residential areas of Compton.

The man abandoned the car in the Watts area of Los Angeles and ran through a crowded area before surrendering on a baseball field at Imperial Courts Recreation Center, which was hosting a toy drive held by the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was among those attending the event and chased after the suspect as he headed toward the baseball diamond, away from dozens of police officers gathered at the park.

Chris Bugbee, a spokesman for Cal State Fullerton, told NBC that police had captured a total of three suspects, but two remained at large.

Stuart said SWAT team members were searching the area.

"A large number of students were able to flee the building where the suspect ran into. They've been evacuated from the campus. Those students and staff members that are still on campus are in what's called a shelter in place," Stuart said before the lockdown was lifted. "Our goal is to go around and rescue those individuals as we do our search. This is going to be an all-night operation."

He added: "It's a huge campus, so it's a very daunting task."

A student in one of the locked-down buildings said he witnessed officers checking every classroom.

"A cop came running through and he said, 'They have guns, they have guns,'" said another witness, Shant Fermanian. "So all these people started rushing so me and my cousin, we looked up, and we just got out of there as soon we can. We had no idea what was going on."

Fermanian said he saw a man, who was later taken into custody, run around a nearby building but did not see any weapons.

Christine Accetta, locked down in McCarthy Hall, tweeted a photo about 6:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. ET) of a barricade students created inside a classroom. Four hours later, Accetta tweeted: "We have been released!"

?

Another student, Raquel Mireles, said the university had been regularly in touch with students via text message with updates on the developing situation.

"They're just trying ... to keep us safe," Mireles said, who said she was in College Park. "They're being really helpful. The cops have come through and told us to stay calm."

She said the blinds had been closed in the classroom she was in, and chairs had been placed in front of the door.

"The lights are off. We're kind of just all huddled together right now," Mireles said.

While she talked on air to NBC4, a loudspeaker announcement told her to evacuate the building.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
