Japan to play France, Brazil in WCup tune-ups

Asian Cup holders Japan will take on football powerhouses France and Brazil in October, the Japan Football Association said Friday, providing valuable experience ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The friendly against France will take place in Paris on October 12, and that against Brazil will be played in Wroclaw, Poland, on October 16.

"I'm glad to have a chance to play against strong teams like them," said Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni. "It will be a good opportunity to help us improve further.

"Away games like this are good experience for those who are only used to playing at home and will help us to move onto a new stage, facing highly skilled players," the Italian added.

Japan have never beaten either team, registering one draw and four defeats against France and two draws and six defeats against Brazil.

Chelsea, United spared as City get fiendish Champions League draw

Fate largely smiled on Manchester United and holders Chelsea in Thursday's Champions League draw, but Manchester City found themselves drawn into a daunting group with Real Madrid, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea, who beat Bayern Munich on penalties in last season's final to claim the trophy for the first time, were drawn in Group E alongside Italian champions Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Danish debutants Nordsjaelland.

Juventus will be appearing in the Champions League for the first time since the 2009-10 season and are likely to present the strongest challenge to Roberto di Matteo's side.

United found themselves in similarly benign surroundings in Group H, having been pitted against Portugal's SC Braga, Galatasaray of Turkey and Romanians CFR-Cluj in the draw in Monaco.

However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not need reminding that it was from a similarly straightforward group -- containing Benfica, FC Basel and Cluj's domestic rivals Otelul Gelati -- that the three-time champions failed to progress last season.

"We have the experience of playing against Galatasaray in the past and we will always remember the 'Welcome to Hell' banners," Ferguson told manutd.com.

"Obviously, we've never played Cluj before but, after the experience of last year, we don't want to make any stupid errors this time. We will play our strongest team to make sure we get through."

United, beaten 3-1 by Barcelona in the 2011 final, are appearing in the group phase for a record 18th time.

As in 2011, this season's final will also take place at London's Wembley Stadium, to mark the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association.

City's pool, Group D, unites the reigning champions of England, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, with the Manchester club the only team never to have won the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini's side were drawn in a similarly taxing group last season and failed to reach the knockout phase, with Bayern Munich and Napoli finishing above them on their first appearance in the Champions League.

City defender Joleon Lescott refused to be discouraged by the draw, tweeting: "Group D highlights the fact why it's called Champions league. #TitleWinnersOnly"

Along with Spain, England are one of only two countries with four teams in the group phase and their fourth representatives, Arsenal, will face Schalke, Olympiacos and debutants Montpellier, the French champions, in Group B.

There was one other newcomer in the draw in the shape of Malaga, who qualified by overcoming Panathinaikos in the play-off round earlier this week.

The Spanish side were drawn in Group C with Zenit Saint Petersburg, Anderlecht and seven-time champions AC Milan, who will have been relieved to avoid a more difficult group after a summer in which they lost a glut of leading players.

Barcelona, finalists in two of the last four seasons, landed in Group G, where they will have fellow former champions Benfica and Celtic for company, as well as Spartak Moscow.

Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, will fancy their chances of qualifying from a group that also includes FC Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb

Last season's beaten finalists Bayern Munich were placed in Group F alongside Valencia, they team they beat on penalties in the 2001 final, as well as Lille of France and Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov.

"The group is manageable for us, at least on paper," said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.

"But the Champions League is always a difficult challenge and every opponent has to be respected. We are looking forward to the first game."

The opening batch of group matches is scheduled for September 18-19.

Biologists create first predictive computational model of gene networks that control development of sea-urchin embryos

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? As an animal develops from an embryo, its cells take diverse paths, eventually forming different body parts -- muscles, bones, heart. In order for each cell to know what to do during development, it follows a genetic blueprint, which consists of complex webs of interacting genes called gene regulatory networks.

Biologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have spent the last decade or so detailing how these gene networks control development in sea-urchin embryos. Now, for the first time, they have built a computational model of one of these networks.

This model, the scientists say, does a remarkably good job of calculating what these networks do to control the fates of different cells in the early stages of sea-urchin development -- confirming that the interactions among a few dozen genes suffice to tell an embryo how to start the development of different body parts in their respective spatial locations. The model is also a powerful tool for understanding gene regulatory networks in a way not previously possible, allowing scientists to better study the genetic bases of both development and evolution.

"We have never had the opportunity to explore the significance of these networks before," says Eric Davidson, the Norman Chandler Professor of Cell Biology at Caltech. "The results are amazing to us."

The researchers described their computer model in a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that appeared as an advance online publication on August 27.

The model encompasses the gene regulatory network that controls the first 30 hours of the development of endomesoderm cells, which eventually form the embryo's gut, skeleton, muscles, and immune system. This network -- so far the most extensively analyzed developmental gene regulatory network of any animal organism -- consists of about 50 regulatory genes that turn one another on and off.

To create the model, the researchers distilled everything they knew about the network into a series of logical statements that a computer could understand. "We translated all of our biological knowledge into very simple Boolean statements," explains Isabelle Peter, a senior research fellow and the first author of the paper. In other words, the researchers represented the network as a series of if-then statements that determine whether certain genes in different cells are on or off (i.e., if gene A is on, then genes B and C will turn off).

By computing the results of each sequence hour by hour, the model determines when and where in the embryo each gene is on and off. Comparing the computed results with experiments, the researchers found that the model reproduced the data almost exactly. "It works surprisingly well," Peter says.

Some details about the network may still be uncovered, the researchers say, but the fact that the model mirrors a real embryo so well shows that biologists have indeed identified almost all of the genes that are necessary to control these particular developmental processes. The model is accurate enough that the researchers can tweak specific parts -- for example, suppress a particular gene -- and get computed results that match those of previous experiments.

Allowing biologists to do these kinds of virtual experiments is precisely how computer models can be powerful tools, Peter says. Gene regulatory networks are so complex that it is almost impossible for a person to fully understand the role of each gene without the help of a computational model, which can reveal how the networks function in unprecedented detail.

Studying gene regulatory networks with models may also offer new insights into the evolutionary origins of species. By comparing the gene regulatory networks of different species, biologists can probe how they branched off from common ancestors at the genetic level.

So far, the researchers have only modeled one gene regulatory network, but their goal is to model the networks responsible for every part of a sea-urchin embryo, to build a model that covers not just the first 30 hours of a sea urchin's life but its entire embryonic development. Now that this modeling approach has been proven effective, Davidson says, creating a complete model is just a matter of time, effort, and resources.

The title of the PNAS paper is "Predictive computation of genomic logic processing functions in embryonic development." In addition to Peter and Davidson, the other author on the PNAS paper is Emmanuel Faure, a former Caltech postdoctoral scholar who is now at the ?cole Polytechnique in France. This work was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Sony debuts NFC and Bluetoothenabled SRSBTM8 wireless speaker

Smartphones, tablets and headphones aren't the only NFC-enabled devices that Sony announced at IFA today. While it didn't make it on stage during the keynote, the company's also officially announced a new wireless speaker that boasts NFC connectivity in addition to the usual Bluetooth -- an addition that lets you play music simply by tapping the speaker with your smartphone. As you can see, the speaker (known only as the SRS-BTM8) is also available in your choice of black or white, and it's clearly designed with portability in mind, boasting an integrated handle along with space for 4AA batteries that promise 20 hours of playback time. Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing or availability just yet, but we'll keep you posted if we hear anything.

Railway

We need to transform how we think about transport and devolve power away from Whitehall, writes Alex Burrows

A fundamental lack of vision and coherent philosophy is holding back Britain?s approach to transport. To succeed, a clear narrative is needed explaining why transport is important and justifying its cost and value to society, together with a plan to turn vision into policy. The current government has dithered over high speed two and new airport capacity, and has no clear story to tell about where rail and aviation fit into a national long-term plan.

The ability to move around freely and easily is critical to all aspects of our daily lives. It connects us with jobs, skills, health, recreation and more, and, as such, it is not an optional extra. Good, well-designed transport can promote two key areas of policy: job creation and economic growth as well as carbon reduction and related environmental benefits. And, as transport infrastructure takes a long time to deliver, we must have a clear idea of how we intend to do so.

Under the present situation the Department for Transport enjoys full control from the centre and places a clear emphasis on transport investment taking place along a narrow cost-benefit assessment without inquiring into the wider economic benefits of investment in major infrastructure. The department approves or rejects major transport schemes proposed by local areas. This leads to overpromising on schemes both in terms of cost and benefit as areas compete to secure precious funding for infrastructure.

To transform this, power and funding needs to be devolved to regional and local bodies which have the knowledge and accountability to manage and deliver the strategic requirements of their area.

Earlier this year Labour released its policy review document, Empowering Communities to Improve Transport. Importantly, this recognised the issue of powers and the need for real devolution. As such, it represents a true break from previous practice.

Transport networks focus around major urban areas and spin out from there into suburban and rural areas. The building blocks for regional transport bodies should therefore be major conurbations encompassing the city-region, the journey-to-work area and the rural areas beyond, which have particular needs in themselves. City-regions must take the lead on transport provision for their areas through regional transport bodies that can balance the interests of the urban heart with rural areas that have different needs and problems. Local areas need particular focus within the regional bodies but to be able to devolve effectively there needs to be a critical mass of money, expertise and powers to wield sufficient clout to make devolution truly effective and efficient.

We should further empower our regional transport bodies to be able to raise their own money for infrastructure investment as well. If an authority has assessed that a new tramline will generate certain economic benefits for the area, then let the area raise a local tax, charge or levy to let it realise the benefits.

Whatever its faults, London?s transport authority, Transport for London, has demonstrated a number of successes in this regard: it has shown that cities can govern themselves responsibly; can identify, plan and deliver successful major transport schemes; that such schemes bring significant economic and social benefits; and that transport powers and funding can be effectively devolved. On a related note, London also has bus franchise powers which have created a hugely improved and more popular bus network while bus use elsewhere in the country has plummeted.

Devolution should also be the principle guiding how we manage our railways in future. We currently have a rail network that is far more expensive than its European counterparts to build and maintain, that is fragmented and that no longer considers rail a public good above all else.

The implication of reconceptualising rail as a public good once more is that the public sector should take a more active role in funding, promoting and delivering a rail network for the benefit of everyone, whether they choose to use it or not, rather than putting more burden on farepayers alone as is currently the case.

Currently we have rail services that are not aimed at delivering the best passenger experience. What is lacking? A standard, transparent approach that people can understand wherever they are on the rail network. We need to have standard peak hours, fare and ticket types, information provision, and a national smartcard or smartphone app for all transport ticketing, better integration of information, fares and timetabling across different services and also across different modes of transport. Private train operating companies have brought real benefits to the rail industry but they take profit out of the network, and, by competing with one another, have blocked a uniform approach at the expense of passengers. The franchise system prevents long-term planning and investment and gives no real role to passengers, the users whose communities rely on decent transport accessibility.

A new way of organising the delivery of rail services must recognise the different operations ? from passenger services to freight, intercity to local and regional services ? that coexist under the umbrella heading of ?rail? and give passengers a real say in them. And, if the country is paying for costly and long-term infrastructure investment, then government must own the assets it is investing in.

First, intercity, high-speed services need a specialist operator focused solely on delivering these services nationally. These equivalents of airline flag carriers are more profitable but are also crucial to the economic wellbeing of our major towns and cities. Intercity services at present include the West and East Coast main lines, the Great Western and East Anglian main lines and the Cross Country and TransPennine long-distance routes. A strong, unified and consistent brand for these services would become the iconic element of train travel. As intercity, high-speed services are of fundamental importance to national, regional and local economic policy as well as to transport policy, these must be run by an alliance of local and national government along with other key stakeholders in consultation to ensure we get maximum benefit from the provision of these services.

Second, local and regional services, so vital for the economic and social wellbeing of cities, towns and communities across the country, should be run by the regional transport bodies that can use the power and funding devolved to them to manage and deliver services.

Third, there are rural services and branch lines, such as the North Norfolk railway and the Tarka line in Devon, which have traditionally been squeezed out or ignored but which are vital arteries for many local people as well as tourist opportunities. These lines should be given the option to be derogated out as truly led and run by users, supported by their regional transport authority.

In all of these operations passengers and communities must be represented in the actual running and delivery, not as consultees, but fully involved and accountable. The local, regional and branch line services could be run as cooperative organisations, or by a specially created local public-private partnership operating company, or the transport authority could give a franchise to a private operator to deliver the services. Ultimately, the local area can determine what is best.

For too long transport has been seen as too difficult, too expensive, and too long term. That must stop. Transport is too important to leave to chance. Not only because ?growth? is the political challenge of the time, but partly because it is, we must put in place a long-term strategy that delivers for passengers and communities first.

Oreo the goat living outlaw's life in Tennessee

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) ? Not wanting to be the people who got Jeff Vlar's goat, city council members in a Tennessee city will consider an exemption for the animal.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/QSm47l) reports the issue is whether a black and white pigmy goat named Oreo can remain in East Ridge as Vlar's pet.

City Manager Tim Gobble says there's no question Oreo is cute. But he also says the city must either enforce its "no livestock" ordinance or find an alternative.

Jeff and Samantha Vlar say they didn't know keeping Oreo was against the law when they got him for their children a year ago.

Mayor Brent Lambert is sympathetic. He has kids, too ? the human kind ? and says the city is willing to look at a narrow exception for Oreo.

Grocery Shopping For Newbies

There?s always a first time for everything and grocery shopping is no exception. Whether you?re a freshman moving in to his first dorm or a new member of the workforce getting an apartment of his own, grocery shopping can be made easier. Doing your grocery orders online and getting the groceries delivered will save you from the embarrassment of gawking at the aisles and lugging everything back home.

First, make a list of things you would have in the grocery delivery. There are several online sites that have pre-made shopping lists to choose from. Include food, personal hygiene, cleaning supplies, medicine and other necessities and group them accordingly.

For food items, plan out your daily menu. If you don?t know how to cook or prefer to get delivery for canned goods and perishable items, remember your food groups and try to get at least one from each classification.

With this list, inventory what you have at home and indicate all the things you need to buy. If you?re on a tight budget, highlight priority items. You can always get the other items on your next grocery delivery.

Once you?re ready to start browsing, keep your list handy and check off items once you add them to the shopping cart. Keep in mind that the running total you are seeing may still lack any markups or fees that the delivery service will charge.

When buying, carefully read all the information on the goods being sold. Take note of packaging sizes, quantities, prices, and delivery time slot availability. Buying in bulk and larger sizes is a good practice if you can make it stay within your budget.

After reviewing and seeing that you have all that you need, move on to the payment process. Always make sure you?re entering a safe URL before entering your personal information. Recheck your payment details and home address, lest the grocery delivery gets lost.

The last step will be the arrival of your groceries. Make sure you have the times right so you can be available for when the delivery person shows up. With your receipt in hand, verify all the items delivered. Look out for damaged and expired goods.

Online shopping lets you browse a store?s merchandise at any time of the day in the safety of your own home. It?s a great way to look for items at your own pace without doing any actual pacing. The new and improved grocery delivery service will also save you on time and gas.

Many countries have a cost of living that is significantly lower than that in the United States. Research locales that appeal to you, and search out those that will allow you to live on the least amount of money possible.

Some countries to consider when it comes to living cheap include India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Mexico, Peru and the Czech Republic. As currency values and economies are always changing, it?s important that you research well before any move to make sure you have the most up-to-date financial information.

Once you know the ins and outs of making a living online, travel no longer has to be a pipe dream. By doing your homework and investing sufficient time and effort, you?ll be able to create an independent source of wealth that allows you to live anywhere in the world that you desire.

Guild Wars 2's Error 42 | Lazygamer .:: Console and PC Gaming ...

angry

Guild Wars 2 launched this weekend for those of you who pre-purchased the game ? but as with most purely online games there have been a few connectivity issues. some players have reported not being able to login to the game after the latest patch, while others are having trouble accessing the online trading post, or switching to other worlds.

Echoing a similar situation that presented itself when a particular server-oriented single-player game had similar issues, Guild Wars 2 has its own error number that ben plaguing some users; Error 42.

?At present, our server team are working on the underlying problems that are causing login issues, thank you for your continued patience,? Arenanet said via Twitter. ?We have re-established server connectivity and are aware of some Error 42 issues. If you find this error please try again to reconnect.?

Another error the company?s aware of is? is Error 1032, which they say is related to ?high demand for World transfers,? which ?might take a several minutes, so try again in a bit.?

It?s taken a fair chunk out of some players? early access ? but let?s just hope all the server issues are sorted by the time the game releases to the general public on Tuesday. MMO?s seldom have a smooth launch though ? and I suspect that even if GW2 doesn?t, it won?t quite cause the internet uproar Diablo III did when it launched broken. It?s understandable that you can;t play a multiplayer game because of server issues?but when some machine in the cloud is stopping you from playing your single player games, that?s when people get?a little irate.

Any of you experience login or other issues with GW 2 this weekend? Let us know!

GOP Senate candidate introduces herself in Redlands

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken speaks during a Townhall Patriot meeting about the upcoming election and her opponent Dianne Feinstein on Thursday at the American Legion Hall Post 106 in Redlands (John Valenzuela/Staff Photographer)

REDLANDS - Republican Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken is making her way around the state to introduce herself to voters looking for change in November.

On Thursday, Emken brought her campaign and message to Redlands, where she spoke to a room full of people at a special Redlands Townhall Patriots meeting at the American Legion Hall off Colton Avenue.

The not-so-well-known candidate was not afraid to pull punches when it came to explaining why she was running. The reason: to get long-time Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., out of office and repeal President Barack Obama's health care reforms.

"Health care is my area of expertise," Emken said. "We have a huge problem (now and) we had a huge problem before Obama came to town with health care delivery and health insurance," she said. "Somehow this new team took a bad problem and now they're making it worse. And folks, that was quite a trick. Obamacare is the end of our health care system as we know it if it is not repealed.

"It's a political tool now for Obama," she said. "And (we need) to get a new president or a new Senate and we can get this thing repealed."

Emken graduated from UCLA in 1984 where she earned dual degrees in economics and political science.

For several years, she worked as an efficiency cost cutting expert for IBM, and most recently worked as vice president for government relations at Autism Speaks, the nation's largest science and advocacy organization devoted to fighting autism.

During her time with the non-profit organization, Emken said, she has worked with former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum to create new legislation for those suffering from autism, and launched a multi-state campaign to secure insurance coverage for autism-related services.

Emken said if she's elected to the Senate, she plans to roll up her sleeves and take care of business.

"I'm committed to going back (to Washington) and making the tough decisions that we have to make to balance the budget to reduce our debt and to make our economy competitive again, and to get it growing," she said. "I'm going to lower corporate taxes. I'm going to look at every agency, every piece of the budget - nothing's off limits, especially entitlements.

"I'm going to stand next to my friend Paul Ryan," she also said, referring to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate, "and we are going to deal with entitlements in an authentic way."

Emken said Feinstein has not come up with solutions to help California.

"She's got a lot of people fooled because she's been very good about giving the presence of someone who is going to be (open) to what you want," she said. "Let me tell you folks, after 42 years in political office ... if she hasn't done it by now, she is not going to do it any time soon.

"Who would imagine that somehow - in the next six years - she's going to get something done? She's a big talker."

Emken said Feinstein is also out of touch with what Californians are going through, especially when it comes to unemployment and foreclosures.

"She has no idea what your families are going through," Emken said, adding that she is very different from her opponent. "People want somebody who is authentic. They want to know that they aren't just looking for another line on their resume."

Emken said her campaign is truly grassroots. And while she said she does not have millions to spend on campaign ads, she said, she is working her way around that using social media and providing commentary on CNN and conservative commentator Dennis Prager`s radio show.

Q&A With Matt Mason Of BitTorrent - Business Insider

Matt Mason is the author of?The Pirate's Dilemma and one of BitTorrent's newest employees.

We recently had the opportunity to talk with him about BitTorrent, piracy, and the changing face of the media business. Here's the takeaway with a full Q&A below:

  • BitTorrent is actively working with artists to figure out how to help them make money with using BitTorrent distribution.
  • The BitTorrent protocol is the de facto piracy tool because it works incredibly well.
  • Many major companies use BitTorrent internally.

BUSINESS INSIDER: Why does BitTorrent seem like the go-to piracy tool?

MATT MASON:?This is an incredible technology for moving large amounts of data across asymmetric networks like the Internet. And that?s the reason it?s been used as a tool for piracy. If you look back through history, the tool that?s always been used for piracy has been the most efficient, ruthlessly disruptive thing. And so often that the birth of new technologies you?ll find this period of chaos where people don?t really understand what?s going on. So when Edison invented the record player, live musicians looked at this device and said "Oh, my God. This device plays live music in venues?"

BI:?We?re going to be put out of business.

MM:?Right, and that was the birth of the recording industry. And I feel like we?re at a similar point in time right now. So the way we look at it is that this is a really amazing technology, there are lots of great uses for it. The idea that the audience is the server farm can apply to a lot of different business models and can really help a lot of different people save money and do things differently. And we should be championing that. And with regard to the content industries, I feel like the way we could be at most service in the world?we can?t stop or block piracy more than anybody else can, but we can talk to 160 million people who are using BitTorrent. And we could say to them ?Hey, are you interested in this?? we can?t track our audience but we know who they are. They talk to us, they engage with us when we ask them to. We know a lot about them. They?re mostly men aged 16-24, either in college or just graduated. Secondary audience is sort of 18-34. There are definitely differences and nuances around the world, but that?s broadly who they are. And they?re really avid, passionate consumers of content. And if you show them a piece of content that they like, they?re much more likely to go and buy the album. They?re much more likely to go and sign up for an email and get updates from their artists. They?re much more likely to go and actually see the show in a theatre or buy the t-shirt. They?re very, very passionate users and consumers of the things that they like.

BI: BitTorrent's really gotten slammed with the perception that it's strictly for piracy. What ways have people been using it more legitimately?

MM: If you look at any organization with a large user base, whether it?s Facebook or Twitter or Wikipedia or Blizzard, all of these guys use BitTorrent to push updates to their servers. And frankly, if their CTOs weren?t using BitTorrent then they shouldn?t be CTOs of companies like that. It?s just a really good technology to use for a lot of different things. Being seen as a piracy tool is a burden to us at this point.

Everybody who works at BitTorrent has this fervent belief in the power of distributive technology and what it can be used for next. If you look at the coming problems in the media industries, the things we?re going to be talking about in the next 10 years, it?s still going to be piracy. That?s not going to change. We?ve got more good ways to find alternatives to piracy than we?ve ever had. And we?re very, very much in the business of trying to create more of those and help people figure out more of those.

We?ve released an API called BitTorrent Torque a couple of weeks ago which is a way for developers to actually develop on top of BitTorrent inside the web. And the reason we did that is we want to see people actually using BitTorrent protocol as the back end for websites where people are trying to host content without having massive, massive bandwidth fees.

BI:?Your browser treats a torrent download as if it were just a normal file.

MM:?We?re not great at building beautiful UIs. We?re not going to build the next social network. But we?re really happy if someone else wants to use it. It?s definitely good if other people are figuring out great new ways to use BitTorrent for really cool stuff. So that?s the idea behind it.

BI:?How easy or complicated it was to get Torque off the ground?

MM:?it was a dedicated team, a small team. It was really kind of a passion project. At BitTorrent, we?re a big believer in letting people run with a good idea. And it was an engineer named Patrick Williams who was just like "This is a great idea. I?m going to build this."

The big idea behind BitTorrent is the audience is the server farm and the more of them there are, the more power you have. I think it?s the closest thing we have to a perpetual motion machine. It?s definitely got more uses than people have explored.

BI:?Can you talk at all about anything that BitTorrent has down the road?

MM:?We?ve got so many thing that are coming up. We?ve been experimenting with new ways to get content creators into the BitTorrent ecosystem and new ways for them to talk to our audiences and also make money. So over the last few weeks, this experiment with DJ Shadow a few weeks ago where he did the first kind of monetized torrent with us where he didn?t ask people to pay for it but there was an advertising offer inside the actual torrent. The idea being every time the torrent was shared there was at least the opportunity for people to engage with him in a way that helped him monetize the piece of content in that torrent.

BI:?So how did that work?

MM: There was a promotional read-me inside the torrent. We also offered it in various places if you were signing up for BitTorrent, we always offer you a piece of content from an artist that comes in and we say here?s something for you to get started as a way to promote artists.?

Russia's rights ombudsman decries Pussy Riot verdict

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's human rights ombudsman on Thursday called the prison sentences handed down to three women from punk band Pussy Riot "excessive" and warned that the case was igniting dangerous tensions within society.

The trio were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred by a Moscow court on August 17 after belting out a profanity-laced anti-Putin song on the altar of Moscow's main cathedral in February.

Vladimir Lukin, who was originally nominated for his advisory role by President Vladimir Putin, said he might challenge the sentencing of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich if their jail terms were upheld on appeal.

"It is a misdemeanor that in a normal, civilized European state, which Russia is, is handled in administrative rather than criminal proceedings. That's why I think the ruling on those women is excessive," he told a news conference when asked about the case.

Western governments and singers have condemned the sentences as disproportionate and the case has become a cause celebre in Western media where most commentators have echoed the Russian opposition's charge that the verdict was part of a crackdown on dissent by Putin.

However, the Kremlin has denounced foreign criticism as politically-motivated. [ID:nL6E8JMJB7] Many Russian Orthodox believers have also said they were offended by the protest, part of a wave of demonstrations against Putin ahead of his re-election to the presidency in March for a third term.

The women said they meant no offence and were protesting against close ties between the state and the dominant Russian Orthodox Church, whose leader, Patriarch Kirill, likened Putin's years at the helm to a "miracle of God" a few weeks before the Pussy Riot protest.

Lukin, a former liberal lawmaker and ambassador to the United States, said the women's stunt was not a crime but a "quite serious misdemeanor".

He said he hoped an appeals court would "more carefully consider all the aspects of this case" and that as ombudsman he had the right to challenge the verdict once it entered into force if he believed human rights had been violated.

"If the sentence remains the same ... I will analyze this thoroughly," he said.

Lawyers for the women have said they expect to file an appeal next week.

"POISONOUS SUBSTANCE OF INTOLERANCE"

The maximum sentence for the crime they were accused of was seven years in jail, but after Putin said they had done "nothing good" but "should not be judged too harshly" the state prosecutor asked for three-year sentences.

Hours after the verdict, the Russian Orthodox Church urged the state to show mercy to the women "within the framework of the law", raising the possibility it might back a presidential pardon or a reduction in their terms.

Lukin suggested the Pussy Riot case, which has inflamed emotions among both liberal and conservative Russians, was widening dangerous rifts in a society that has endured repeated upheaval over the past century.

"It is regrettable that a poisonous substance of intolerance and brutality is spreading in our society. Recently it has become typical and even fashionable not to discuss problems but to lash about at one another," Lukin said.

"The instinct for dialogue is fading and the fighting instinct is coming into the foreground. This is very dangerous."

In April, Patriarch Kirill called the Pussy Riot protest part of an "attack by persecutors" on the church and on what it regards as traditional Russian values.

Priests have reported an increase in the vandalism of churches, while liberals fear Pussy Riot's jail term will encourage extreme nationalists and lead to violence.

A nationalist, Russian Orthodox activist group called Holy Rus said this week it was establishing volunteer patrols to guard churches and prevent any further blasphemous acts.

"This is a horrible idea," said Lukin, who called on the authorities to look into the initiative, which he suggested evoked the turbulence that preceded the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

"Have we not had enough of our own history when various volunteer patrols of enthusiasts ... were beating up other enthusiasts? And all that led a civil war."
