Obama, GOP see no need to stop the cuts

Washington: Unlike in earlier rounds of budget brinkmanship, President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans both seem content to fight out their latest showdown on the current terrain, let across-the-board spending cuts take effect on March 1 and allow them to stay in place for weeks, if not much longer.

This time, there is no market-rattling threat of a government default to force the two sides to compromise, no federal shutdown on the short-term horizon and no year-end deadline for preventing a tax increase for every working American.

The rhetoric is reminiscent, for sure.

?So far at least, the ideas that the Republicans have proposed ask nothing of the wealthiest Americans or the biggest corporations,? Obama said this week as he campaigned to pin the blame for any negative effects on his political opponents. ?So the burden is all on the first responders, or seniors or middle class families,? he said in comments similar in tone to his re-election campaign.

Article continues below

Republicans, standing on political ground of their own choosing, responded sharply to the president?s fresh demand for higher taxes.

?Spending is the problem, spending must be the focus,? said House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, while Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky declared, ?There won?t be any easy off-ramps on this one. The days of 11th hour negotiations are over.?

A crisis atmosphere could yet develop this spring, when hundreds of thousands or even millions of threatened government furloughs begin to take effect and the spending cuts begin to bite. Already, Republicans are considering legislation to give the administration greater flexibility in making the cuts, a step that could minimise the impact on the public. It?s a step the White House says it opposes, although the depth of that conviction has yet to be tested.

At heart, the present standoff is yet another indication of the political resistance to a compromise curbing the growth of Medicare, Medicaid and possibly Social Security, a step that both Obama and Republicans say is essential to restoring the nation?s fiscal health. It is the last major remaining challenge in divided government?s struggle, now in its third year, to reduce deficits by $4 trillion (Dh14.69 trillion) or more over a decade.

Counting the across-the-board cuts now beginning to command the nation?s attention ? at a 10-year cost of $1.2 trillion ? the president and Congress have racked up more than $3.6 trillion in savings. Much came from spending, although legislation that Republicans let pass at year?s end raised taxes on the wealthy to generate an estimated $600 billion for the Treasury over a decade.

The so-called sequester now approaching was never supposed to happen. It was designed as an unpalatable fallback, to take effect only in case a congressional super-committee failed to come up with $1 trillion or more in savings from benefit programmes.

Now, more than a year later, Republicans are fond of saying that the idea itself originated at the White House.

That skips lightly over the fact that their own votes helped enact it into law.

Also that they decided a month ago that it marked the moment of most leverage in their struggle to manoeuver Obama and Democrats into curtailing benefit programmes. To accomplish that objective, they have already raised the debt limit without winning any cuts in exchange, a step they once vowed not to take. And within two weeks, they are likely to launch legislation making sure the government operates without interruption when current funding authority runs out for most agencies on March 27.

Republicans aren?t the only ones partial to verbal sleights of hand.

In a letter to lawmakers earlier this month, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sounded a series of alarms. The spending cuts ?could compromise? the health of more than 373,000 mentally ill or emotionally disturbed individuals, ?could slow efforts to improve? health care for American Indians and Alaska Natives, she wrote, and admissions to inpatient addiction facilities ?could be reduced.?

Could or could not. Soon or later. Nothing pinned down.

The administration hopes to win over the public and bring Republican lawmakers to heel, and it dispatched Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to the White House briefing room on Friday.

?Come to the table and start talking? to find a way to avert the cuts, the former GOP lawmaker urged members of his own Republican Party.

Peppered with sceptical questions, LaHood directed reporters to his department?s website, with a listing of more than 300 air traffic facilities where overnight shifts could be eliminated or perhaps closed entirely.

Asked if his office was receiving unhappy calls from the public, he got to the political point.

?My phones will ring from members of Congress [asking] ?why is my control tower being closed??? he said.

No furor over Adolf Hitler's name on Indian ballot

(AP) ? Adolf Hitler is running for election in India. So is Frankenstein.

The tiny northeast Indian state of Meghalaya has a special fascination for interesting and sometimes controversial names, and the ballot for state elections Saturday is proof.

Among the 345 contestants running for the state assembly are Frankenstein Momin, Billykid Sangma, Field Marshal Mawphniang and Romeo Rani. Some, like Kenedy Marak, Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem and Jhim Carter Sangma, are clearly hoping for the electoral success of their namesake American presidents.

Then there is Hitler.

This 54-year-old father of three has won three elections to the state assembly with little controversy over being named after the Nazi dictator.

His father had worked with the British army, but apparently developed enough of a fascination with Great Britain's archenemy to name his son Adolf Hitler ? though he also gave him the middle name Lu, Hitler said.

"I am aware at one point of time Adolf Hitler was the most hated person on earth for the genocide of the Jews. But my father added 'Lu' in between, naming me Adolf Lu Hitler, and that's why I am different," Hitler told The Associated Press from the small village of Mansingre, 200 kilometers west of Gauhati, the capital of the nearby state of Assam.

Hitler said his name has not stopped him from traveling the world, including to the United States and Germany.

"I never had problems obtaining a visa but I was asked many times during immigration as to why I should have such a name. I told the immigration staff I possibly didn't have a role in my naming," he said.

India played little role in World War II, and many Indians view Hitler not as the personification of evil but as a figure of fascination. Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" is prominently displayed at many Indian bookstores. The owner of a menswear shop named his store "Hitler," then expressed puzzlement last year after Israel complained.

Musfika Haq, a teacher in Meghalaya's capital, Shillong, said such names are common in the state.

"Parents obviously get fascinated by names of well-known or great leaders, but must be unaware that some of them, like Hitler, had been highly controversial," he said.

Iran says it has brought down a foreign spy drone

LONDON (Reuters) - Iran's Revolutionary Guards have brought down a foreign surveillance drone during a military exercise, the official Islamic Republic News Agency said on Saturday.

"We have managed to bring down a drone of the enemy. This has happened before in our country," the agency quoted war games spokesman General Hamid Sarkheli as saying in Kerman, southeast Iran, where the military exercise is taking place.

The agency gave no details on who the drone belonged to.

In Washington, a Pentagon spokesman said he had seen the reports. He noted that the Iranians did not specifically claim that the drone was American.

In the past, there have been incidents of Iran claiming to have seized U.S. drones.

In early January Iranian media said Iran had captured two miniature U.S.-made surveillance drones over the past 17 months.

Several drone incidents over the past year or so have highlighted tension in the Gulf as Iran and the United States flex their military capabilities in a standoff over Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran said in January that lightweight RQ11 Raven drones were brought down by Iranian air defense units in separate incidents in August 2011 and November 2012.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Not Come with Exynos CPU, Nor Super AMOLED Display, Release Date Yet Unconfirmed

While the Samsung Galaxy S4 release date is getting closer, more leaked details about the next-gen flagship smartphone of the South Korea-based company are starting to hit the web.

After Eldar Murtazin, the faimous Russian blogger,?said that the Samsung Galaxy S4 release date was set for March 14th?during an event held in New York, the guys at Sammmobile?come with fresh details about the technical specifications of the Android-powered smartphone. It was just yesterday when we?ve told you that Galaxy S4 might not come with the Exynos 5 Octa SoC, as Samsung?s proprietary chipset has overheating issues, and today one of the biggest source for Samsung leaks are confirming the info.

According to a Samsung ?insider? quoted by the?aforementioned?tech publication the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be based on a Snapdragon 600 processor, similar to the one fitted inside the recently announced HTC One. The same report claims that the processor underpinning the Samsung flagship says that the Snapdragon 600 processor is overclocked at 1.9 GHz, compared to HTC One?s 1.7 GHz clock rate. The source also informs that Samsung Galaxy S4 will come with 2 GB of RAM and that it will be available in three variants with 16, 32, or 64 GB of internal storage.

The latest smartphone launches have indicated that the 1080p 5-inch displays are becoming the 2013 standard for the high-end Android segment. Samsung Galaxy S4 will reportedly boast a 4.99-inch screen with full HD resolution, but what?s even more interesting is that the South Korea-based company will ditch the Super AMOLED panels.

Sammobile?s trusted source says that the flagship smartphone will come with a SoLux Display, but didn?t reveal more details about it. Is it based on LCD3 technology like HTC One?s display? We don?t know yet, but if it is to believe Murtazin?s report, we will find out in less than a month.

The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 also leaked?alongside?with other details and it seems that the terminal will be 140.1 mm tall, 71.8 mm wide and 7.7 mm thin, thinner than it?s biggest rival, Apple?s iPhone 5. As it was previously reported the Galaxy S4 will keep the same two-capacitive-one-physical button combo below the 4.99-inch display.

A low-quality photo of the Galaxy S4 also leaked revealing a smartphone that is not following the design language introduced last year by the SGS3, but a square-ish device reminiscent of the Galaxy S2. We?d recommend you to take the rumor with a grain of salt, as the South Korea-based company is usually using some rubber cases on their prototypes, in order to make sure that the real design of their smartphone isn?t revealed ahead of the official announcement.

The Samsung insider quoted by Sammobile claims that the Galaxy S4?s back is made of plastic, but the smartphone?s sides are made of aluminium.

We know almost everything about the Galaxy S4 so far, and it was yesterday when some photo samples posted on Google Plus confirmed that the SGS4 will come with a 13 megapixel camera. We?ve exclusively told you about the Photo Sphere-like Samsung Orb camera feature of the Galaxy S4 a couple of days ago, and hopefully the company?s software?engineers?will get ready just in time to fit it inside the next-gen flagship, so the camera aspects of the new-comer will sure be impressive.

Are you excited by the Snapdragon 600 -?SoLux display team, or would you rather the Galaxy S4 coming with an Exynos chipset and Super AMOLED display? Please let us know in the comments section below.

Documentary chronicles Fall River native's efforts to educate educators in Africa

When longtime Fall River educator Bill Molloy visited the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, seven years ago, he wasn?t only struck by the abject poverty, but by the dedication of the country?s teachers, most with little education themselves.

That?s when Molloy created the nonprofit African Teachers Foundation, a group dedicated to teaching the teachers of East Africa to improve their skills and, ultimately, improve the lives of their students.

A documentary, created by Providence-based filmmakers John Lavall and Kate Kelley, that chronicles the work of Molloy and his small staff of volunteer educators will premiere on March 1.

Lavall and Kelley produced the film ?Kujifunza: The Work of the Africa Teacher Foundation? after they traveled with Molloy to Kenya last June for three weeks.

?Kujifunza,? translated to English from Swahili, means ?to learn.?

The short film?s premier is free and open to the public, and will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the Paff Auditorium on the University of Rhode Island?s Providence campus, which is located at 80 Washington St.

The filmmakers were attracted to the project because they knew of the important work being done by Molloy, and the documentary was a way to ?describe that work in a different way,? said Kelley.

?It?s sometimes hard to get people in that place,? Kelley said, ?We went there with a gut feeling and we really wanted to do it for him.?

Kelley said she and her partner were impressed with the African teachers, who are thirsty for information and knowledge from the foundation?s volunteers.

Molloy said the film beautifully documents what the Africa Teacher Foundation has accomplished.

?We work in the bush and we work in the urban slums of Nairobi giving teachers the tools to change lives,? Molloy said. ?The filmmakers did a masterful job giving a visual to what we do.?

The Africa Teacher Foundation has trained more than 740 Kenyan and East African teachers, who, in turn, have improved the education of 29,000 students. The entire effort is funded through private donations, Molloy said.

Last summer, during a training session, Molloy said he asked a teacher named Amos how he was doing.

?He told me, ?I wish today was tomorrow so I share this with my students.? That sums up why we do this work,? Molloy said.

Born in Fall River?s South End, Molloy started his 44-year career in education at B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1970 as an English teacher, then served as a building administrator before retiring from the city school department as assistant superintendent of curriculum in 2004. A year later, Molloy joined the staff at the University of Rhode Island?s School of Education, where he still teaches. He now resides in Portsmouth, R.I.

Lavall is four-time Emmy Award-winning producer and director. His work has been broadcast nationally on PBS, and his documentary films have been shown in festivals throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Kelley is a photographer from Boston who teamed up with Lavall in 2012. Their company is called Devlo Media.

Did Technology Kill Traditional Dating?

Today's the day, in case you didn't notice. But we're sure your Instagram is flooded with perfectly-filtered flower and teddy bear photos, your Twitter feed's filled with sickeningly sweet hashtags, and love statuses abound on Facebook.

Yet this Valentine's Day may not be as traditionally romantic, one study says, as social networks and online dating take the place of time-honored courtship.

When did revealing the intimacies of your relationship (or lack thereof) online become the norm? How many unfamiliar acquaintances flirtatiously Facebook poke you before even starting a conversation? Technology both helps and hinders the romantic process. It may be lack of time, a call for constant connection, or just plain laziness that draws people to online dating but, without a doubt, it's shaking things up.

International online dating service AnastasiaDate conducted a survey revealing one in four men won't get off the couch to find love. The majority of men ages 35 to 55 have dated online and, of those, 65% successfully met a special someone.

The allure of the Internet, aside from speed and efficiency, also seems to be the veil of courage it provides for would-be suitors.

One quarter of men in the study say they're too nervous to speak to a woman they find attractive, but they fare much differently approaching a person online rather than a face-to-face interaction. One in five men will date "out of their league" because of the wider opportunities online dating yields.

Virtual dating has done more than ease the jitters of the first, awkward conversations, it has significantly altered the well-traveled steps of conventional courtship.

Instead of taking time to explore the welcome intricacies and surprising quirks of a date, all details are available at your fingertips. We've all googled a person before meeting them, scanning over their career history, hobbies and favorite TV shows, not to mention years' worth of Facebook albums.

Online personas allow people to fall in love at first click, even before meeting. Though conversations may not flow so naturally if you've memorized someone's musical taste without asking.

Lawrence Cervantes, chief communications officer for AnastasiaDate.com, argues the shift from traditional dating to online doesn't rid romance of its established habits, it only improves them.

"It's far more convenient, takes emotional stress away from the process, and is more efficient," Cervantes tells Mashable. "It doesn't eliminate the traditional dating ritual, just gives it a shot of Vitamin B."

The report shows most respondents believe one of the benefits is getting to know someone before committing, and 74% feel technology has made dating easier. Perhaps tweeting about your latest favorite gadget is the new alternative to dropping gift hints to your mate.

How drastically has technology impacted our relationships? Is the art of offline dating lost or does online romance improve it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

South Florida?s Class of 2014 is loaded with elite high school football prospects

This was the class that everyone waited on. Loaded with as much talent as there has ever been in South Florida.

As soon as the ink dried on the papers for the Class of 2013, there was an instant rush to quickly see the Class of 2014. From the first combine and 7-on-7 tryout, it?s easy to see why so many have waited for this group to arrive.

This is easily the deepest class Miami-Dade has ever witnessed ? with as many as 35 top-fight prospects that every college in the country has already started to get serious about.

Never before has this region of the country had running backs who could be among the top 10 nationally. In Sony Michel (Plantation American Heritage), Dalvin Cook and Joseph Yearby (Miami Central), and Brandon Powell (Deerfield), you have elite ball carriers who have already established themselves.

This is also a class that will finally produce an array of quarterbacks. From the run/pass, athletic version such as Treon Harris (Miami Booker T. Washington), Quentin ?Winky?? Flowers (Miami Jackson), Trayon Gray (Carol City), Taron James (Miami Norland) and Alain Eduoard (Hialeah), to the drop-back prospects such as Sean White (Davie University School), Wade Freebeck (Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas), Nick Jeanty (Miramar), Hunter Boyett (Miami Westminster Christian) and Peyton Bender (Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons), this is a class that might be the deepest that this area has produced in a long time.

After the top four running backs, there are also difference-makers such as Mardre London (St. Thomas Aquinas), LaKeith Stafford (Norland), LaJuan Hunt (University School), Henry Bussey (Hialeah), Paul Anderson (Hallandale), Lashone Garnett (Miami Southridge), Krondis Larry (Booker T. Washington), Aeron McNeal (Deerfield) and Miramar?s Cameron Rigby.

?I have been watching football prospects in this region for over 30 years and have never been around so much quality depth,?? said Dana Wiley of Prep Films. ?You could see that last year, when these athletes were juniors.??

Colleges also will find program-changers at receiver such as Homestead?s Ermon Lane, Steve Ishmael (North Miami Beach), Tyre Brady (Homestead South Dade), JoJo Robinson (Miami Northwestern), Henderson ?Prince? Gray (Miami Monsignor Pace), Isaiah McKenzie (American Heritage), Cornelius Floyd (Miami Gulliver) and Norland?s Kendrick Edwards.

Offensive linemen are also starting to emerge with University of Miami commitment Trevor Darling (Central), Ryan Crozier (St. Thomas Aquinas), A?lique Terry (Hialeah), Nicholas Linder (St. Thomas Aquinas), Siffo Pierre (Coral Springs Taravella), Erik Lenzen (Cardinal Gibbons), Nigel Kemp (Miramar Everglades), Jakhari Bolton (Miami Killian), Deion Cineus (Miami Beach) and Miami Belen Jesuit?s Jonathan Schultz, who spent last year in Jacksonville.

On defense, the focus - as usual will be in the secondary ? where high-level players such as Nigel Patton (Booker T. Washington), Deatrick Nichols (Central), Quincy Wilson (University School), John Battle IV (Hallandale), Marquese Dudley-Gordon (Weston Cypress Bay), Alshinard Harris (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Carter Jacobs (American Heritage) are among the best anywhere.

Vision restored with total darkness in kittens with amblyopia

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Restoring vision might sometimes be as simple as turning out the lights. That's according to a study reported on February 14 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, in which researchers examined kittens with a visual impairment known as amblyopia before and after they spent 10 days in complete darkness.

Researchers Kevin Duffy and Donald Mitchell of Dalhousie University in Canada believe that exposure to darkness causes some parts of the visual system to revert to an early stage in development, when there is greater flexibility.

"There may be ways to increase brain plasticity and recover from disorders such as amblyopia without drug intervention," Duffy says. "Immersion in total darkness seems to reset the visual brain to enable remarkable recovery."

Amblyopia affects about four percent of the general population and is thought to develop when the two eyes do not see equally well in early life, as the connections from the eyes to visual areas in the brain are still being refined. Left untreated, that imbalance of vision can lead to permanent vision loss.

In the new study, the researchers examined kittens with amblyopia induced by experimentally depriving them of visual input to one eye. After those animals were plunged into darkness, their vision made a profound and rapid recovery. Further examination suggested that the restoration of vision depends on the loss of neurofilaments that hold the visual system in place. With those stabilizing elements gone, the visual system becomes free to correct itself.

Darkness therapy holds promise for the treatment of children with amblyopia, the researchers say, but don't try this at home. They think that the darkness must be absolute to work, with no stray light at any time. It is also important to address the original cause of the amblyopia first, and to ensure that a period of darkness will not harm an individual's good eye.

The researchers are still working out just how much darkness is required, and for how long. Regardless, they say it is unlikely that a drug could ever adequately mimic the effects of darkness that they've seen.

"The advantage of a simple nonpharmacological sensory manipulation, such as a period of darkness, is that it may initiate changes in a constellation of molecules in a beneficial temporal order and in appropriate brain regions," they write.

Texas cops say they found $500K of cocaine in car radiator, couple arrested

Cocaine

/ AP (CBS/AP) WEIMAR, Texas - The radiator in a vehicle driven by a Florida couple was definitely running hot according to South Texas law officers who say they uncovered about $500,000 worth of cocaine inside it.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office on Monday announced the drug bust and the arrest of two people from Lake Wales, Fla.

A traffic stop Friday on Interstate 10 several miles east of Weimar led to a search, whereupon one trooper noticed the radiator appeared to have been altered. A drug-sniffing dog located packages holding more than 20 pounds of cocaine.

The Colorado County Sheriff's Office says 43-year-old Marciano Moreno and his 52-year-old wife Maria were being held Monday on charges of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. Bond was set at $25,000.

Weimar, close to where the couple was stopped, is about 90 miles west of Houston.

Kate Upton leads the way as leggy Sports Illustrated models appear on David Letterman

By Leah Simpson

Kate Upton's second Sports Illustrated was officially unveiled on Monday - enlarged into a huge Billboard on the front of the David Letterman studios in New York.

The 20-year-old model was, of course, on had for the big reveal, proudly posing beneath her cover outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

It was this time last year that Kate's first cover was unveiled, again with an appearance on the Letterman show.

Kate was joined by a bevy of stunning Sports Illustrated models as she arrived, looking fantastic in an asymmetrical tight black dress.

They?re known for appearing in men?s magazine Sports Illustrated in their bikinis.

Upton led the way as she whipped off her padded and fur collar-lined coat to reveal a one arm mini dress.

Although the blonde looked great in the fitted frock ? which she wore with Christian Louboutin heels ? she appeared to have some bruising on her slender legs.

On Friday, it was revealed that Upton had landed the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover for the second year in row and the issue features Upton in bodypaint.

She tweeted a picture of herself backstage with fellow SI stars Chrissy Teigen, Katherine Webb and Hannah Davis who all similarly flaunted their pins.

Despite showing some skin, many of the ladies were rather smart about staying well and covered up from the cold with a snug coat.

Nina Agdal ? who goes topless to each a fish burger in the new Carl?s Jr. commercial ? wore a beige hooded jacket over her orange zigzag trim frock.

Emily DiDonato fashioned a dark coat with fur lining on the inside as she wore a dress with crochet top and white pleated skirt. Plus Katherine covered up with a glitzy navy blue cardigan.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

Image

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It's an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that'll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 -- wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

After the break, check out a video of Gunawan giving us the lowdown on Lumio.

Home Improvement Does Not Have To Be Difficult

TIP! You have to sand any wood you plan to stain and then use a damp cloth to wipe it off. If you want a smooth effect, choose a piece of sandpaper with a very fine grit.

People think it?s hard to make improvements to their home. However, it doesn?t have to be this way if you know what you are doing. Just like anything, any home improvement task is much easier if you have right advice and information. This article has a lot of tips to help you complete your next project.

TIP! Money spent on the addition of insulation to your house can help you spend less money down the road. With most older homes, you will find the insulation to be inadequate.

When you replace your windows with energy efficient ones, you are conserving energy as well as money. Replacing windows throughout the home can increase the value, and decrease your heating and cooling costs.

TIP! Using light colors such as a pale blue, light lavender or soft greens to create an airy feeling of tranquility. Try to stick to cotton and linen fabrics rather than heavier materials.

Before starting any home improvement projects that provide a noisy environment for the neighborhood, make sure to meet with the neighbors and let them know the project schedule. Living next-door to construction is extremely annoying. Neighbors tend to appreciate the information regarding such a disturbance and will surely thank you for letting them know the estimated duration.

TIP! To keep your yard lit after dark and still save on electricity, switch out your regular light for one with a motion sensor. With the motion sensor on most models you can make adjustments to the sensitivity, and they can be manually turned on.

For an inexpensive way to spruce up your home?s exterior, plant some bright flowers. There are many varieties to choose from that can add color through the changing seasons. Also, keep bushes and shrubs well trimmed and the lawn perfectly manicured. A small amount of regular maintenance can make a big difference in the appearance of your home.

TIP! Chandeliers have a place in even modest homes today. You can find a stunning focal piece for your dining area for less than five hundred dollars.

If you paint your house, select neutral hues. Neutral colors will make it appear more spacious. Using broader or bigger baseboards will make the room look larger. These simple options can dramatically improve your home?s look, and they cost very little.

TIP! Before painting, cover outlet covers with some aluminum foil. Conveniently placed aluminum foil can do a good job of protecting your covers from paint and is easier than tape to apply.

Replace the doors of your cupboard. Not everyone can pay for brand new cabinets. You can make your cabinet look brand new by replacing the doors or the knobs. Just make sure you carefully measure to determine what you need before you take the plunge. They are quite simple to install. It just takes a few screws to make the change.

TIP! Watch for offers from flooring stores and home improvement stores that will save you money on installation fees. Often, they will reduce the cost of installation to extremely low levels to help sell the actual carpet.

Most home improvement projects can be easy with the proper knowledge. If you?re aware of the right ways to improve your house, you can easily complete the projects. Implement what you?ve just read and get started today.

(AP) ? When Ben Brust tied the game at the end of regulation with a shot just from just inside midcourt, his teammate Mike Bruesewitz looked over at Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and saw something unusual.

His coach had both his arms in the air.

"You know when he shows some emotion, you've done something pretty special," Bruesewitz said.

Brust hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than 40 seconds left in overtime as Wisconsin beat No. 3 Michigan 65-62 on Saturday.

"It was awesome, something I'll remember forever, and I'm sure a lot of people will," Brust said of the game, which ended with students storming the court and Bruesewitz taking the public address announcer's microphone to thank the crowd as students celebrated around him.

The Wolverines became the third top three team to lose this week as No. 1 Indiana lost to Illinois and No. 2 Florida was beaten by Arkansas. This should be the sixth straight week with a different No. 1 in The Associated Press' Top 25.

Brust's shot at the end of regulation was a dramatic turn of events for Wisconsin (17-7, 8-3 Big Ten) and a soul crusher for Michigan (21-3, 8-3).

Just moments earlier, Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a contested 3-pointer to put the Wolverines up 60-57 with less than 3 seconds left in regulation.

Following a timeout, Bruesewitz passed up his first option in the inbounds play and hit Brust in stride. The guard took one dribble across halfcourt and launched the shot, which hit nothing but net.

Ryan said the play was drawn up to see how Michigan defended the first cutter, Brust read the defense and reacted.

"The best thing was Mike's pass on the dime on the run, didn't have to reach back for it, able to catch it all in one motion," Ryan said.

Michigan still had fouls to give before the shot, and coach John Beilein said the order coming out of the timeout was to foul. He also put Caris LeVert on Brust to bolster the defense.

"We were definitely fouling, wanted to keep everyone in front of us and (Brust) turned the corner on (LeVert) just enough that he couldn't foul him," Beilein said. "I thought we had them once they couldn't get their initial guy.

"With Caris' quickness, we thought he could get there, but he didn't."

For all the fireworks in the final 3 seconds, the teams only managed seven points in overtime, including Brust's winning 3-pointer.

Following Brust's shot, Hardaway couldn't connect on his drive to the hoop on the next Michigan possession, and Glenn Robinson III fouled Jared Berggren on the rebound.

The Wolverines went to a full-court press with two more fouls to give. But the Badgers broke the press, and Michigan had to foul twice more to finally put Ryan Evans on the free throw line.

Evans, who shoots less than 43 percent from the line, missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and Burke couldn't connect in a rushed final possession for the Wolverines.

It was another grinding win for the Badgers keyed by their defense. Michigan came in as one of the top scoring teams in the country at almost 78 points per game. But Wisconsin held Michigan to less than 40 percent shooting from the field, including 5 of 18 from beyond the 3-point line.

Michigan was 1 for 7 from the field in overtime, and the offensive futility was highlighted by one sequence in which Mitch McGary stole the ball outside the 3-point line and drove the other way only to miss the layup with Berggren defending the rim.

Beilein said the Wolverines missed out on 14 points thanks to missed layups.

"I'm not talking about when they're really contesting," Beilein said. "I'm talking about we had the ball, the basket and us, and it didn't go in."

Brust scored 14 points for the Badgers, while Berggren added 13 and eight rebounds. Sam Dekker scored 12 points, while Evans finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Burke scored 19 points to lead Michigan, but needed 21 shots to do it. Hardaway added 18, and McGary had 12 points and eight rebounds.

It was the second straight game for both teams to go past regulation after the Badgers beat Iowa 74-70 in double overtime on Wednesday and Michigan downed Ohio State 76-74 in overtime on Tuesday.

Several Wisconsin players said consecutive overtime games exemplified their will to win even as critics contend they're not talented enough, not fast enough and, as Bruesewitz said he's seen on Twitter, not good-looking enough.

"We have a group of guys in that locker room that believe and is going to fight until the end until you tell us we can't play any more basketball," Berggren said. "We just find a way to get it done."

Girl shot for defying Taliban discharged from hospital

LONDON (AP) ? Malala Yousafzai, the teenage Pakistani education activist shot in the head by the Taliban, was discharged from a British hospital Friday after undergoing skull reconstruction and receiving a cochlear implant to restore her hearing.

The 15-year-old had been released for a few weeks in January but re-entered Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital to undergo the latest procedures last weekend. The hospital said Malala is "making good recovery" and will now continue her rehabilitation at her family's temporary home in Birmingham.

Malala was shot by a Taliban gunman on Oct. 9 while on her way home from school in northwestern Pakistan's Swat Valley. The militant group said it targeted her because she promoted "Western thinking." Malala had been an outspoken critic of the Taliban's opposition to educating girls.

The teen was airlifted to Britain from Pakistan to receive specialized medical care and protection against further Taliban threats. She is expected to remain in the U.K. for some time; her father, Ziauddin, has secured a post with the Pakistani consulate in Birmingham.

The shooting sparked outrage in Pakistan and many other countries, and Malala's story increased the global attention for the struggle for women's rights in her homeland. In a sign of her impact, the teen made the shortlist for Time magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2012.

In a video statement taped before her latest surgeries, Malala said she was "getting better, day by day" and would continue to campaign for girls' education.

"I want to serve. I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child, to be educated," she said, speaking clearly but with the left side of her face appearing rigid.

Near Timbuktu, 2 bodies show reprisal killings

TIMBUKTU, Mali (AP) ? The bodies are buried here, in the side of a dune less than a mile outside this desert capital, dumped out of sight in a forgotten and uninhabited zone.

Except the wind undressed the grave.

It threw off the blanket of yellow sand to reveal a white piece of clothing. Soon the children of the shepherds who spend their days roaming the dunes with their flocks began talking about the two men buried there.

By the time journalists were led to the shallow grave 11 days after the two were last seen, the desert dwellers knew their entire biography: their names, their professions, the fact that they had been arrested by Malian soldiers on the same day that the French took control of Timbuktu from Islamic extremists. Most importantly, they knew their ethnic group ? both were Arab.

Their deaths, as pieced together by The Associated Press from interviews with family members, residents and witnesses, as well as from an examination of the bodies, strongly suggest the two were summarily executed by Malian forces, in reprisal against the city's Arab minority.

Ever since al-Qaida-linked extremists seized control of Mali's northern half last year, the international community has discussed launching a military intervention to free the occupied territory. For nearly as long, the United Nations as well as the United States has urged caution, in part over worries that Mali's abuse-prone military could carry out acts of revenge against the ethnic minorities which were associated with the extremists ? including Arabs.

Despite these warnings, France unilaterally launched a military operation exactly one month ago to take back the north, after the al-Qaida-linked fighters began pushing southward. The French swept through northern villages and towns, accompanied by Malian army troops, and liberated Timbuktu on Monday, Jan. 28.

It was around 10 that morning, as French troops in armored personnel carriers were still basking in the cheers of the crowds welcoming them, that Malian soldiers in pickup trucks sped up to the Nour El-Moubin Madrassa, a Quranic school. The headmaster of the school was a longtime Arab resident of Timbuktu, Mohamed Lamine. He was wearing a white boubou, a flowing robe like those worn to the mosque by the Wahabi, an ultraconservative sect accused of supporting the Islamic extremists.

His young wife was just returning from running an errand when she saw about six soldiers leading away her husband and a close friend, Mohamed Tidiane, a businessman who sold carpets imported from near the Algerian border.

"I saw they had bandaged his eyes," said Ani Bokar Arby, Lamine's wife. "Since that day, we haven't seen him."

Arabs and Tuaregs make up less than 15 percent of Mali's population of 16 million, and most of them live in the north, according to estimates by the U.S. State Department. While they have lived in Mali peacefully for years, activists fear that they will now be targeted by those seeking retaliation for the Islamic extremists' occupation.

In the first three weeks of the military intervention that began on Jan. 11, Human Rights Watch documented the summary executions of at least 13 suspected supporting the Islamic radicals, and the disappearance of five others in the garrison town of Sevare and the nearby village of Konna.

In the group's report, published last week, witnesses described soldiers at a bus station in Sevare detaining passengers suspected of association with the rebels, as the men frantically tried to find someone in the crowd to vouch for them. The soldiers drove or marched the men to a nearby field, shot them and dumped their bodies into four wells, according to the witnesses.

On the day her husband was arrested, Arby, who had been married for just four months, ran to her parents' house. Although everyone from shepherds to hotel waiters to the young men who jog across the dunes at sunset seemed to know the location of her husband's grave, she had not ventured there because she was afraid of the soldiers. A team of AP reporters offered to take her there.

Arby and her parents left early on Friday morning, carrying a shovel. When the car could not pass, they got out and padded across the dune, which has a rippled texture that looks like the bottom of the ocean.

They walked in silence until they reached a spot marked by desert grasses.

At the point where the dune met the plain, they saw a rise in the sand ? and a piece of white cloth poking through. They scraped away a bit of the dune, and saw the folds of a man's robe, the long kind that covers the torso.

Bokar Faradji, the wife's father, climbed down with the shovel.

The young woman seemed to fold inwards. She sat down on the lip of the dune and pulled her veil around her face. When the body began to emerge, she said she recognized her husband's robe. When she saw his black pants, she began to sob.

"Be strong," said her father, Bokar Faradji.

Gently, he scraped away the sand near the corpse's head. Tufts of hair appeared. Then a bullet fell out of the sand.

The father picked it up, and threw it back.

Mohamed Lamine, a man in his 50s, was lying face down in the dune. His friend, the carpet seller, lay nearby in the same blue boubou he was wearing when he was loaded into the military pickup. Overwhelmed, the family stopped, then shoveled the dirt back.

A spokesman for the Malian military in Timbuktu, Capt. Samba Coulibaly, declined to answer questions about the discovery of the body. "I don't know anything about it," he told the AP by telephone.

Residents say it's possible Lamine had ties to the Islamic rebels, who imposed their brutal, unyielding form of Islam on the relatively moderate Muslim culture that has long been the norm in this landlocked, Saharan nation. His detractors point out that his school was allegedly built with funds from Saudi Arabian sponsors, and that he is a relative of Sanda Abou Mohamed, a leader of the radical Ansar Dine Islamic group that ruled Timbuktu for the past 10 months.

His family doesn't deny the family tie to the Ansar Dine leader, but claims Lamine was not part of the armed group ? why else, they argue, would he have stayed in Timbuktu when most of the city's Arab population had fled in fear of reprisal?

"On Monday, when he was taken away, my daughter came running home to tell me that her husband had been arrested," Arby's father said as he stood over his son-in-law's grave. "I told her not to worry, be strong. Because if he has done something wrong, we have courts, and he will be judged. I believe in our system of justice. I believe in the army of Mali."

"Now I don't know what to do," he said. "What should I say? What should I tell my daughter who has tears streaming down her face?"
