CAF helps bring three rural areas high-speed Internet ...

The Chairman of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), Julius Genachowski was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies of three rural areas.? Douglas County and Topaz Lake in Nevada along with Alpine County in California now have access to high-speed broadband services.? Before today, these areas did not have access to any high-speed Internet connections.

Due to the great expense of installing fiber and additional copper cable in remote locations and rough terrain, many rural communities have been unable to get anyone to invest in providing high-speed Internet access.? The CAF (Connect America Fund) has changed this by providing money to help ISPs install the infrastructure to support high-speed Internet connections.

Frontier Communications logo6 CAF helps bring three rural areas high speed InternetThe Chairman and CEO of Frontier Communications, Maggie Wilderotter was with Chairman Genachowski in the ceremonies.? Some Indian tribal and other community leaders were also present for these celebrations.

Maggie Wilderotter was quoted as saying ?Broadband services are critical to economic growth and a vital community. Our goal at Frontier is to ensure that our customers, regardless of where they reside, enjoy the same advanced services as consumers in major metro areas. Today, together with Chairman Genachowski, we celebrate a vision for America that makes broadband services ubiquitous, connecting rural customers with family, friends and all the Internet offers. Education, healthcare, and employment opportunities will expand as Frontier continues to increase broadband availability in rural markets.?

Alpine County, California covers the communities of Fredericksburg, Markleeville, Paynesville, Woodfords and the Woodfords Community tribal area.? Nearly 625 residences are now served.

Gardnerville and Topaz Lodge, Nevada now has nearly 425 homes with available high-speed Internet Service.

Douglas County, Nevada has more than 5,700 homes and businesses that will soon have high-speed Internet services.

Drake Gets NCAA Championship Ring

Drake put in work on the hardwood? Not exactly. But the world-renowned artist did recently receive an NCAA Championship ring from the Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball squad. The gift was to show appreciation of Drake's appearance during coach John Calipari?s ceremony at the Big Blue Madness back in 2009. Congrats, Aubrey ? sort of.

'RHOBH's' Adrienne Maloof, Paul Nassif split

By Us Weekly

Adrienne Maloof and Paul Nassir in May.

Updated at 1:30 p.m. PT:?Another broken "Housewives" household.

As suspected, "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' "?Paul Nassif has filed for legal separation from wife Adrienne Maloof. The plastic surgeon and hotel mogul have been married for nine years and share three young sons, Gavin and twins Colin and Christian.

PHOTOS: Housewives splits

Filing the documents in an L.A. County Superior Court Monday morning, Nassif told TMZ : "The welfare of our children is my primary focus as Adrienne and I work through this difficult time. I want the best for her and our children and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy away from the cameras."

Friction between the couple was never exactly a secret to fans, as their sometimes uncomfortable bickering was a common focus on the Bravo hit. "There is a lot of anger and frustration. It's all the stuff you saw on TV," a family friend of the couple tells Us Weekly. "They fight constantly."

Adds the friend: "It was a very volatile relationship. But they are trying to keep it civil for the sake of the kids."

Original story: Adrienne Maloof is stepping out on her own. After nine years of marriage and three sons together, the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star and husband Paul Nassif are splitting.

After TMZ reported that plastic surgeon Massif plans to file for legal separation this week, hotel mogul Maloof told Radaronline: "I'm so sorry that this is happening, but my children are my life, and sometimes we need to do what's best for them."

On the first two seasons of Bravo's smash reality show, Maloof and Nassif bickered -- seemingly good-naturedly -- on camera.

Their young sons Gavin and twins Colin and Christian were rarely seen on-camera for the show, costarring Kim and Kyle Richards, Lisa VanderPump, Camille Grammer, Taylor Armstrong and Brandi Glanville.

"It's an unfortunate situation, but I have to have my kids' best interest at heart," Maloof added.

It's not the first marriage to disintegrate on "RHOBH." The end of both Grammer and Armstrong's marriages also played out during the show; tragically, Russell Armstrong took his own life in August 2011.

Video: Intense battle in Syria?s biggest city

>>> we want to turn our attention now to syria , the fighting intensified there today and the death toll mounted as government forces try to regain control of that country's largest city, aleppo . while americans may not know a lot about it, aleppo is a city larger than chicago. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel was able to file a report for us tonight from inside syria .

>> reporter: witnesses have described to us a horrible scene today in the city of aleppo which is now come under attack by syrian government forces. by tanks, artillery, and helicopters. much of the fighting is in the south and southwest of aleppo where rebels are holed up, fighting against what appears to be a full-on government onslaught. families are trying to leave aleppo any way they can. in taxis, on motorcycles, some families have managed to come to villages like this one, which are now under rebel control. one man who left aleppo today said as he was leaving, he saw bodies on his left, bodies on his right. many of them of women and children . but once families do reach villages like this one, the situation is not much better. this village is completely surrounded by syrian forces and often comes under attack. brian?

Romney talks tough on Iran during visit to Israel

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - U.S. Republican candidate Mitt Romney, presenting himself as Israel's best friend in the November 6 presidential election, said on Sunday that "any and all measures" must be used to keep Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

A top aide said Romney would support an Israeli military strike if all options had been exhausted, but the candidate himself balked at repeating that position.

In a foreign policy speech in Jerusalem, Romney voiced strong support for the alliance between the United States and Israel and seemed to suggest that President Barack Obama had let the relationship flounder.

"We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel voice their criticisms. And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel's adversaries," said Romney, the walls of the Old City lining the hilltop behind him.

The former Massachusetts governor was in Jerusalem on the second leg of a trip to strengthen his foreign policy credentials in his race to unseat Obama.

"We should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is our fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. We recognize Israel's right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you," he said.

Though he adopted an aggressive tone, Romney did not go as far as his senior foreign policy advisor, Dan Senor, who said earlier: "If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability, the governor would respect that decision."

The aide's comments put Romney at odds with Obama's efforts to press Israel to avoid any preemptive strike before tough Western economic sanctions against Iran run their course.

Romney, however, refused to repeat them when asked by CBS' "Face the Nation".

"Well I think because I'm on foreign soil I don't want to be creating new foreign policy for my country or in any way to distance myself in the foreign policy of our nation. But we respect the right of a nation to defend itself," Romney said.

The failure of talks between Iran and six world powers to secure a breakthrough in curbing what the West fears is a drive to develop nuclear weapons has raised international concern that Israel may opt for a military strike.

"STRONG MILITARY THREAT"

The presidential hopeful was greeted warmly earlier by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an old friend of his, who has at times had a strained relationship with Obama.

Netanyahu issued his customary call for stronger measures behind the sanctions to prevent Iran from developing an atomic bomb, which Israel says would be a threat to its existence. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

"We have to be honest that sanctions have not set back the Tehran program one iota and that a strong military threat coupled with sanctions are needed to have a chance to change the situation," Netanyahu said.

Israel, widely assumed to be the Middle East's only nuclear-armed state, has warned it is only a matter of time before Iran's nuclear program achieves a "zone of immunity" in which uranium enrichment facilities buried deep underground will be invulnerable to bombing.

Though Washington has been pressing Israel not to launch a solo strike on Iran, Obama has not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to curb Iran's nuclear drive.

In an effort that appeared timed to upstage Romney's visit to Israel, Obama signed a measure on Friday to strengthen U.S.-Israeli military ties. His defense secretary, Leon Panetta, is also expected to visit Israel later this week.

Romney's overseas tour got off to a rocky start, when he angered the British by questioning whether London was ready for the Olympics, a statement he was forced to clarify after a rebuke from Prime Minister David Cameron.

His visit to Israel gives him the opportunity to appeal to both Jewish voters and pro-Israel evangelical voters and contrast himself with Obama.

Romney has sharply criticized Obama's handling of Iran as not being tough enough.

After talks with Israeli leaders, Romney met Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. He then visited the Western Wall, Judaism's most revered site.

Wearing a black Jewish skullcap and surrounded by a determined throng of security personnel who cleared a path for him, Romney carefully navigated his way through hundreds of worshippers, some of whom shouted cries of support.

Romney ends his trip on Monday with a fundraiser for a crowd of mostly Jewish Americans who live in Israel.

The Romney campaign initially declared the fundraiser off-limits to reporters, but on Sunday said it would allow press coverage after journalists complained the campaign was reneging on a prior agreement to open more of its finance events.

Wit and Wisdom of an Engineer: Field Force Data Visualization ...

Additional information relating to the previous blog - -

EPRI
3412 Hillview Ave.
Palo Alto, CA, 94304
USA

Press release date: June 14, 2012

Background Utilities struggle with inaccurate data, lack of standards and vendor "lock-in," which can prevent the cost effective use of their technology investment. Data exists in disparate systems, inaccessible to both the operations center and field personnel. Mobile computer power is wasted displaying out-of-date or irrelevant data. Often, data is not used because it is not available in the vendor specific software that is loaded on the mobile computing device. In short, the investment made in IT by utilities has yet to reach its full potential.

As utilities begin to integrate systems that previously operated with little or no data interconnection, it becomes easier to link together related data. Creating access to that data in a visual way could be of significant benefit to utilities. A standards based IT architecture is needed for the visualization of data and the use of visual data in the decision making process. This can result in the creation of powerful diagnostic and management tools that can utilize interconnected data and make it accessible to utility professionals to better understand the network and the context of any unexpected behavior.

Industry Opportunity Emerging technologies in the mobile computing field could be used to create a mobile integrated data access platform. One such emerging technology that exists in other industries is augmented reality. Augmented reality is believed to have been coined in 1990 by Thomas Caudell, who worked at Boeing, and is a combination of computer generated elements such as geospatial data, sensory input, video and other graphics that are overlaid on a direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment. The reality that is displayed to the user by a device has additional context aware information added (or augmented) to it. Augmenting reality is a way to enhance the user's current perception of reality. A familiar example of augmented reality is superimposing the line of scrimmage and the 10 yard line-to-gain colored lines that are now commonly displayed during televised football games in the United States.

Developing New Technology The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is developing data visualization technology for the utility engineering and operations professionals. Using tablet and smart phone technologies, real-time data from the internal magnetometer and 3-axis gyroscopic are combined to stabilize and provide a more accurate "compass" when a user points the mobile device at distribution pole or at transmission and distribution conductors. Global Positioning System (GPS) and Common Information Model (CIM) messages serve to locate and retrieve segmented GIS data from a utility GIS database and the device renders the GIS data segments on screen as a map information overlay from the camera image. An example of this would be seeing a pole structure symbol through the camera while the screen displays the camera image with the one line circuit drawing overlaid.

This data serves as an overlay on live camera images that incorporates the data from multiple sources and wraps the information into a picture of real images and enhanced data overlays. This augmented live camera data can serve to present data overlays such as the maintenance history of a power line device, fault location data, asset ID information, and outage management information in a concise form at the specific location. Data can be hidden or displayed on screen as needed. The rendered information links to other systems in the utility back office such as the outage management system (OMS), work management system, asset management system, document management system and other systems and databases. By utilizing the touch screen capabilities of the tablet platform, actions may be performed that link the user in the field to the capabilities in the back office via further CIM messaging.

Illustrating How This Technology Can Be Applied To illustrate how this can work, consider an engineer or technician working in the field that has been assigned to assess the condition and performance of distribution assests in a specific neighborhood. Upon arriving at a location, the GIS and magnetometer (compass) built into a tablet would identify the location and by holding up the tablet, would allow them to see in real-time a video of the area with data overlays on the view and a single line diagram and on the map. Using this interface this person could navigate through all the data for a transformer or switching device, identify its location in the GIS and a single-line; be shown the down-stream circuit on a map, query into its asset history, maintenance history, manufacturer information and catalogue. They could also query as to the state of a switch, execute a switching order, display maintenance procedures, identify premises with outages, automatically tag devices, create work orders, etc. This could all be possible with a properly integrated data environment and accurate GIS data.

The mobile device would use its computational power to render segments of the GIS data base much the same way as games do today. These segments of the GIS database can be sent wirelessly or held in local mobile device memory for image rendering. High speed wireless data coupled with CIM commands allow a variety of database information to be interfaced for a fast, seamless visualization of the data on the mobile device. Evolving technology advances already allow higher wireless data transmission speeds for communication to mobile devices. These technologies, coupled with the rapid development of mobile device capabilities will largely overcome the obstacles that have plagued mobile computing in the past: inferior performances (CPU, memory), connectivity (latency, bandwidth, reliability) and usability (small screen, uncomfortable input controls).

As a first step in bringing this technology to reality in utility environments, EPRI is developing a field force data visualization tool on an iOS based device (such as an iPad or iPhone) which utilizes the Common Information Model (CIM) for messaging. The advantages of such a platform include: ? Cost - this platform can be considerably cheaper than a tough-book style laptop. ? Simplicity - upgrades to iOS devices are simple and can be done in the field. ? Communication - iOS devices typically switch from Wi-Fi to cellular communications and back without issue. ? Cloud data and computing capabilities - large amounts of data could be securely transferred directly between devices even over large geographic distances.

Potential for the Industry The impact of this technology on utility field operations could be significant. The cost of automating field operations could be greatly reduced because even when ruggedized, the tablet platform would still be substantially less costly than traditional ruggedized laptops. Operational costs could be reduced because the application on the tablet would replace a number of seat licenses for the individual applications that are currently needed. Finally, operational efficiencies could be increased as work such as maintenance, switching, design, storm damage and outage restoration workflows would be performed from a common platform that would link the correct data with the correct systems.

Garrigus sets record and takes lead in Canada

ANCASTER, Ontario (AP) ? Robert Garrigus would have made Arnold Palmer proud Saturday at the Canadian Open ? for the way he treated the people, and for the scores on his card.

Garrigus combined his power with a couple of timely putts at rain-softened Hamilton for a 6-under 64, breaking the 54-hole scoring record at golf's third-oldest championship that was first set more than a half-century ago by Palmer. Equally impressive was when he didn't even have a club in his hand.

After a routine par on the sixth hole, Garrigus walked over to a volunteer and said, "Thanks for being here." After he chunked a wedge into a bunker on the seventh, one of his poorer shots of the third round, he found another volunteer behind the green and said, "Appreciate what you do for us."

It's the kind of stuff that made Palmer the King.

"It makes me feel good just to say it," Garrigus said. "Like I said, it's on their dime. And we need the fans. We need the volunteers. We need the sponsors, and a lot of guys out there don't lean that way to thank the volunteers. I've had hundreds of volunteers come up to me and say, 'Thanks for saying thank you.' That means a lot."

Now if he can just finish like the King.

Garrigus had a one-shot lead over William McGirt, who played with poise with his name atop the leaderboard for the first time on the weekend at a PGA Tour event. McGirt had a 66 and actually lost ground, going from a share of the lead to one-shot behind. He will be in the last group with Garrigus.

Garrigus was at 16-under 194, one shot better than Palmer in 1955 at Weston Golf & Country Club in Toronto, and matched two years ago by Dean Wilson at St. George's Golf & Country Club, also in Toronto.

"Oops. Sorry, Arnie," Garrigus said when told about the record.

Palmer, however, went on to win the 1955 Canadian Open for the first of his 62 titles on the PGA Tour. Garrigus will be going for his second win, though this tournament is a long way from being settled.

Garrigus was fortunate to escape with par, not to mention his health, on the final hole when his 3-iron off the tee ran out 290 yards and just short of the bridge. Because he was inside the hazard, he couldn't ground the club and had a rules official make sure the bridge wasn't beneath the ball. It was a few inches ahead of the ball.

"If I hit it a millimeter fat, I break my wrist," Garrigus said. "I had to knife it out of that lie and catch part of the bridge, and hopefully the ball gets the top part of the bridge and bounces up. And that's exactly what I did. I hit it perfect."

Scott Piercy had a 67 and was two shots behind.

Scott Stallings, who won last week in Mississippi, birdied his last two holes for a 63 and was four shots behind, along with Chris Kirk (63) and Bo Van Pelt (67). Stallings ended a streak of nine consecutive PGA Tour events in which the 54-hole leader failed to win. The ninth was Ernie Els coming from six shots behind at the British Open. Stalling won later that day.

"A lot of guys haven't been able to hold leads this year," said Garrigus, still known for losing a three-shot lead on the final hole in Memphis two years ago.

No matter the difficulty of any course ? Hamilton rates among the best in the Canadian Open rotation ? soft greens are no match for the best players. And now, the 72-hole record at the Canadian Open is in jeopardy. That belongs to another Palmer ? Johnny Palmer ? who had a 263 in 1952 at St. Charles in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Garrigus' goal?

"Foot to the floor, as much as possible," he said.

He wasn't speaking about the scoring record as much as leaving town with the trophy, which would put him in a World Golf Championship next week at Firestone and the Masters next April. He might not have a choice the way scoring has been this week.

McGirt, who started the day atop the leaderboard for the first time in his career, was never more than two shots behind. That came on the par-3 13th, when his tee shot came up well short and into a bunker, leading to his lone bogey. He atoned for that with a birdie on the next par 3 at No. 16, and recovered from a poor tee shot with an up-and-down from some 45 yards short of the 18th green.

Garrigus wasted no time joining the chase with a 316-yard tee shot that left him only a 5-iron that he stuffed inside 3 feet on the 530-yard fourth hole. He followed by driving through the green on the 329-yard fourth hole into a back bunker for an up-and-down, then made another strong move around the turn with three birdies in a four-hole stretch, courtesy of a couple of tricky putts.

The third round started late and in threesomes to cope with overnight rain, though Hamilton began to dry out in the afternoon. Proof of that was the 3-iron Garrigus hit off the 18th tee to stay well short of the creek. He was stunned to see it go through the fairway near the bridge.

The forecast Sunday is for sunshine, which could make Hamilton the test it typically is.

Kirk, who began the third round six shots behind. Starting with the third hole, Kirk made seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch. He was 7 under for his round with eight holes remaining, needing birdie on half of them for a 59. He was never thinking about golf's magic number, though, which was a good thing. He closed with eight pars, and he was OK with that.

"I was just trying to keep my head down and keep going," he said. "When you have those days where everything is going in the hole, you make as many as you can."

DIVOTS: Vijay Singh, winless on the PGA Tour since 2008, started the third round three shots behind and had a 69. He was seven shots out of the lead. ... William McGirt and his wife, Sarah, are expecting their first child in January. That might make it tough for him to get to Kapalua if he were to win on Sunday, a nice problem to have. ... Greenbrier winner Ted Potter Jr. was in the mix until a 40 on the back nine.

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

New research confirms efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression

Friday, July 27, 2012

In one of the first studies to look at transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in real-world clinical practice settings, researchers at Butler Hospital, along with colleagues across the U.S., confirmed that TMS is an effective treatment for patients with depression who are unable to find symptom relief through antidepressant medications. The study findings are published online in the June 11, 2012 edition of Depression and Anxiety in the Wiley Online Library.

Previous analysis of the efficacy of TMS has been provided through more than 30 published trials, yielding generally consistent results supporting the use of TMS to treat depression when medications aren't sufficient. "Those previous studies were key in laying the groundwork for the FDA to approve the first device for delivery of TMS as a treatment for depression in 2008," said Linda Carpenter, MD, lead author of the report and chief of the Mood Disorders Program and the Neuromodulation Clinic at Butler Hospital. "Naturalistic studies like ours, which provide scrutiny of real-life patient outcomes when TMS therapy is given in actual clinical practice settings, are the next step in further understanding the effectiveness of TMS. They are also important for informing healthcare policy, particularly in an era when difficult decisions must be made about allocation of scarce resources."

Carpenter explains that naturalistic studies differ from controlled clinical trials because they permit the inclusion of subjects with a wider range of symptomatology and comorbidity, whereas controlled clinical trials typically have more rigid criteria for inclusion. "As a multisite study collecting naturalistic outcomes from patients in clinics in various regions in the U.S., we were also able to capture effects that might arise from introducing a novel psychiatric treatment modality like TMS in non-research settings," said Carpenter. In all, the study confirms how well TMS works in diverse settings where TMS is administered to a real-life population of patients with depression that have not found relief through many other available treatments.

The published report summarized data collected from 42 clinical TMS practice sites in the US, and included outcomes from 307 patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) who had persistent symptoms despite the use of antidepressant medication. Change during TMS was assessed using both clinicians' ratings of overall depression severity and scores on patient self-report depression scales, which require the patient to rate the severity of each symptom on the same standardized scale at the end of each 2-week period. Rates for "response" and "remission" to TMS were calculated based on the same cut-off scores and conventions used for other clinical trials of antidepressant treatments. Fifty-eight percent positive response rate to TMS and 37 percent remission rate were observed.

"The patient outcomes we found in this study demonstrated a response rate similar to controlled clinical trial populations," said Dr. Carpenter, explaining that this new data validates TMS efficacy in treating depression for those who have failed to benefit from antidepressant medications. "Continued research and confirmation of the effectiveness of TMS is important for understanding its place in everyday psychiatric care and to support advocacy for insurance coverage of the treatment." Thanks in part to the advocacy efforts of Dr. Carpenter, TMS was recently approved for coverage by Medicare in New England, and it is also now covered by BCBSRI. "Next steps for TMS research involve enhancing our understanding of how to maintain positive response to TMS over time after the course of therapy ends and learning how to customize the treatment for patients using newer technologies, so TMS can help even more patients."

DENVER (Reuters) - Mourners packed a Denver church on Thursday for the funeral of a 23-year-old woman who was among the 12 people shot to death at a midnight showing of a new "Batman" film, and a judge clamped down on leaks of information about the accused gunman and the investigation.

The private, two-hour memorial for Micayla Medek ended with sobbing family members clustered around her flower-covered coffin, some softly singing "You Are My Sunshine" while others blew kisses after the hearse that bore her body away.

It was the second funeral in as many days for victims of the rampage at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Denver suburb of Aurora and ranks among the worst outbursts of U.S. gun violence in recent years.

In addition to the 12 people killed in last week's shooting, 58 others were wounded. Twelve victims remained hospitalized on Thursday evening, five of them in critical condition.

Authorities have yet to offer a motive for the bloodshed.

One clue under examination was a mysterious package that was delivered to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where the suspect, James Holmes, 24, had been enrolled as a doctoral student of neuroscience. The package was reported to contain a notebook detailing the shooting scenario.

According to a Fox News report, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source close to the investigation, the parcel was addressed to a psychiatrist on the university faculty and included hand-drawn illustrations of the massacre with pictures of stick figures shooting at other stick figures. The psychiatrist was not identified.

JUDGE CRACKS DOWN

Fox News said the parcel containing the notebook arrived at the school on July 12, more than a week before the shooting, but remained unopened until a search of a university mail room on July 23, three days after the crime.

According to Fox, the mail room search was prompted when the psychiatrist reported receiving a separate package with Holmes' name in the return address.

The university confirmed in a written statement on Wednesday that a suspicious package was delivered to the campus by mail on Monday, saying that it was "immediately investigated and handed over to authorities within hours."

But the school disputed an element of the Fox News account, denying that a package had sat on a loading dock since July 12. Fox News said on Thursday it stood by the accuracy of its source.

The report about the notebook appeared to have spurred the judge overseeing the case to crack down further against unauthorized disclosures related to the investigation.

In an amended gag order made public on Thursday, Arapahoe County District judge William Sylvester reiterated his previous decree barring law enforcement authorities from "disseminating information that presents a danger to the fairness of a trial in this matter."

"The District Attorney's Office is hereby ordered to immediately serve all law enforcement agencies involved in this case with this order set forth in the court's pre-trial publicity order," Sylvester wrote.

The judge issued a separate order on Thursday, at the request of prosecutors, specifically barring the university from publicly divulging any information about Holmes under Colorado's open-records law.

THE JOKER

Formal charges against the suspect, who dyed his hair bright orange and was said by authorities to have referred to himself as the Joker -- Batman's comic book archenemy -- are expected to be filed on Monday.

Holmes was arrested moments after the shooting early Friday morning behind the theater, and was ordered at his initial court hearing on Monday to remain held without bail.

The 1,200-seat New Hope Baptist Church in northeastern Denver was filled to overflowing with mourners attending Medek's funeral. Medek, 23, a community college student who worked at a local Subway fast-food outlet, had gone to the movie with a group of friends.

Many of the mourners wore pink "Hello Kitty" ribbons pinned to their clothing in remembrance of the popular cartoon and merchandising character that was a favorite of Medek's.

At the conclusion of the service, the casket topped with white carnations and pink roses was wheeled out to the front entrance of the church, where family members gathered to greet the coffin. Many wept, crying, "We love you Micayla."

One police officer wiped tears from his eyes as hundreds of mourners stood in the bright sun until the hearse pulled away, some blowing kisses after the vehicle.

Holmes' neighbors in the three-story apartment house where he lived were permitted to begin returning to their homes on Wednesday night for the first time since the building was evacuated on Friday, shortly after the shooting.

Residents were ordered out when Holmes' unit was discovered to have been left booby-trapped with explosives capable of leveling the entire complex had they been detonated.

Creative isn't an option | Pressing Pause

There are plenty of articles that will tell you how important creative is; that if you fail to engage, you fail to communicate anything. As Dave Trott frequently points out, it?s rather simple: you must gain attention; then communicate; then persuade. Similarly, Gestalt theory ? which states we make sense of things by organising them into groups ? says that if you start with a communication that is pretty much like everything else in the category, then you fail at the first hurdle.

But while I certainly agree it?s important to stand out, I prefer to think about advertising as a series of communications that build a relationship with an audience. Which means standing out isn?t always the be all and end all. In fact, I think creativity has a far more valuable role to play in our business. In a consistent theme from my last blog, which focussed on CRM, things start to feel different if you transpose your thinking about advertising relationships to human relationships. So here too, it would be technically valid to think in terms of friendship, love and family.

If we look at all marketing through this lens, we can develop some interesting parallels. One is that brand communications are akin to gifts; an expression of our courting, gratitude or appreciation. So you should ask yourself whether you are giving your audience the brand version of a bland birthday card with money in the envelope or a surprising, truly heartfelt present.

They know you?ve spent a lot on that TV ad, that sponsorship or that clever automated email series. But if it shows no understanding of them, no appreciation of them, and no imagination, you become the distant uncle, name unremembered, who tries to cling on to relevance during your changing life through bigger but not better bribes for attention.

It is generally true that communications will go through brand control, who measure the comms against a clear list of what does and does not make up the brand?s personality. I vehemently agree that this is a good idea. But we should be putting all brand communications through creative control as well. Does this communication inspire, interest, excite? Or is it just content to remind our audience that we exist? Doing the former involves risk, but I believe taking no risks is itself a route to crisis.

Only 4% of advertising is remembered positively. That?s a pretty alarming statistic. With around ?18 billion spent on advertising a year, that?s around ?17 billion of wasted money. Creating communications that are actually creative is all too often considered optional, and frequently to be avoided. But spending billions on a communications that are not remembered, let alone appreciated, is a failure that our industry highlights all to infrequently. But this is failure, and it should be vilified.

We?ve all bought loved ones gifts that missed the mark and the intelligent reaction to this is to use it as a springboard to find out why. In my experience there is generally a sense of gratitude that you tried, and invested your time and imagination to go past the voucher rack in WHSmith.

Our audiences are intelligent. They know you can?t know them inside out. They also know being creative isn?t easy, and they not only respect but admire and sometimes love brands that both try and succeed. With the Olympics coming up, it feels appropriate to make a sporting point to finish. In the field of creativity, as in the field of sport, there is a sin far greater than losing, and that is not to try at all.

"Fringe" production delayed by John Noble's sleep disorder

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Fringe" star John Noble has been having trouble sleeping lately - and the feeling is likely catching among his castmates and crew.

Production on Fox's sci-fi drama was halted for two weeks earlier this week because Noble, 63, is suffering from a sleeping disorder. Noble, who plays Dr. Walter Bishop, will seek treatment for his condition during the downtime.

"Fringe" is expected to go back into production on August 7. The delay is not expected to affect the series' September 28 premiere date.

The J.J. Abrams-produced "Fringe" was renewed for a fifth and final, 13-episode season by Fox this spring, so that the show could tie up loose ends for fans.

"'Fringe' is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television's most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve," Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting, said of the renewal.

Victims' families urge less usage of Holmes' name

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some relatives of people killed in the Colorado theater shooting are urging television news outlets to resist using alleged killer James Holmes' name and image in their stories for fear it gives him the infamy he craves.

Two families made that specific point to Anderson Cooper on CNN, who said Tuesday he has largely complied. Some news experts, while saying journalists must be attuned to these sensitivities, also warned against losing sight of the chief responsibility to inform the public.

Tom Teves, whose son Alex was among 12 people shot and killed Friday in Aurora, Colo., at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," challenged TV news divisions during a Monday interview with Cooper.

"I would like to see CNN come out with a policy that said moving forward we're not going to talk about the gunman," Teves said. "What we're going to say is, a coward walked into a movie theater and started shooting people. He's apprehended. The coward's in jail. He will never see the light of day again. Let's move on to the victims. Never talk to him again."

Jordan Ghawi, whose 24-year-old sister Jessica was killed, said he has been talking publicly about her in part because "I don't want the media to be saturated with the shooter's name. The more air time these victims have, the less time that man gets his time on television.

"I can tell you the shooter in Virginia Tech and Norway and not long ago here in Denver," Ghawi told CNN on Friday. "I don't want that to happen here. I want the victims to be remembered rather than just this coward."

Cooper said he didn't use Holmes' name at all while he was on the air Monday, instead using phrases like "suspect," ''accused killer" or "accused shooter." He also tried to limit images of Holmes on his show, airing some from the suspect's court appearance Monday about halfway through his hour-long newscast.

He said his show was acting on its own, not from some CNN directive.

"Obviously my primary role is to report and be a journalist and tell people as much as possible," he said. "I think people know that person's name. They certainly know it by now and they've certainly seen the pictures over and over again."

Traveling to Colorado to report on the scene gives journalists a better idea of the community's sensitivity than they might otherwise get, he said.

Certainly there have been instances where TV news organizations hold back, like when there are particularly gruesome pictures or if reporting could threaten a hostage's life. American television networks resisted showing pictures of people jumping to their deaths from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and, after the first day of the story, restricted use of video of the airplanes striking the Twin Towers.

But news executives constantly hear from people who don't want disturbing pictures shown, either because they are painful or give undue publicity to people responsible for brutal acts, said Marcy McGinnis, a journalism professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a longtime former CBS News executive.

"If you follow that, unfortunately, you would basically get to the point where you would never show anything of a tragic nature because it always affects somebody personally," she said. "You can't really make the decision on what to show or not show based on what the people affected are thinking."

Who Holmes is and why he allegedly committed the atrocity is a major part of the story, she said, and digging into this could provide information that someday stops a person from doing something similar.

At the same time, most people were curious about what Holmes looked like when he made his first court appearance on Monday, she said. A larger issue for 24-hour news networks moving forward will be the temptation to use images of Holmes so often they become like video wallpaper, especially because photos of him with dyed hair and wild eyes are so striking.

Cooper said he didn't think it was an either-or situation. "I think you can be sensitive to a community's feelings and still report accurately and with as much detail as anybody else," he said.

He also doesn't want to contribute to increasing Holmes' infamy so copycats might follow.

He's backed in this opinion by James Fox, a professor in criminology at Northeastern University and one of the nation's foremost experts on mass murder. He's in favor of the media not naming these suspects to deny them the notoriety they often seeking. While most Americans see these people as monsters, some view them as heroes to emulate.

The media should also stop reaching for the kind of superlatives that a potential killer might seek to one-up by categorizing something as the "biggest, the deadliest, the worst, the first," Fox said. "You know what the problem with that is? Records are there to be broken."

Bill Wheatley, a veteran NBC News executive who now teaches at Columbia University, said that while it is important for networks to be sensitive, he doesn't believe that restricting the use of Holmes' name or picture will have any effect on whether someone does something similar.

He doesn't understand how television can cover a judicial process involving an alleged mass killer and not use the person's picture if it's available.

"Self-censorship can be very dangerous," Wheatley said. "I'm not indicating there aren't times when self-censorship is appropriate, but they should be rare. It's a slippery path, because at some point you find yourself not reporting information that the public deserves to have.

"The line is not always clear," he said.

The extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a multifaceted victory for homeowners, businesses, banks, and real estate professionals. This brings certainly to the areas throughout the nation where coverage is necessary to obtain a mortgage.

The Surface Transportation Bill (H.R. 4348) included the specifications necessary to reauthorize NFIP through 2017. President Obama signed the bill into law on July 6, 2012. Reforms to NFIP include:

    • Multifamily properties: insurance available to cover residential properties of 5 or more residences (Section 100204)
    • Repetitive loss: eliminates properties from receiving coverage multiple times (Section 100205)
    • Repayment Plan: funds borrowed will have a repayment plan beginning six months after funds are borrowed with reports on progress to full repayment (Section 100213)
    • Floodplain maps: improved accuracy with technical expertise leadership (Section 100215)
    • Research: coverage on business interruption and additional living expenses, report on building codes and floodplain management (Sections 100233 and 100235)
    • Flood Loss Allocation Formula: establishes by rule a standard formula to determine and allocate wind and flood losses to avoid complicated lawsuits (Section 100253)

    3.

WAITING TO SELL YOUR LAND ? TIMES CHANGE / IT?S TIME

? We barely could give land away the last few years, but times are changing.? Even in those meager years, I sold more land across the state than most other brokers. Before the real estate crash I was a land specialist with millions of dollars of transactions, but then I had to change and also sell other investment properties, which was fun, but I love to sell land, one acre to thousands of acres.

Since I was a land specialist, many of my clients, Sellers and Buyers remember me and now they are calling me again, so this is the time to get back into land and none of my clients, including future clients, will miss out on getting their best deal.

Also, if you are up-side down on your land, like many Americans, and the lender is giving you a hard time, now is the time to put your land on the market. Lenders are making deals now with short sales.? I have been working with banks for many years ? I learned how to work with them.

    ?

If you have any questions about the 1 to? 3 above, I will gladly sit down with you and share my expertise and my professional opinion with you. Obviously I am also in this to make money, but it could be a win-win situation for all of us.
