Grub to Grub, brainchild of second-grade teacher Julie Jones, Charlotte, received $15,000 Wells Fargo grand prize and $5,000 coaches? award at inaugural SEED20 competition sponsored by Social Venture Partners Charlotte to find, promote and fund socially innovative ideas; Jones will use funds to pilot grub-composting program using bioconversion process that diverts food wastes from landfills while producing protein-rich chicken and fish feed for local farms. Friendship Gardens received $7,500 as grand prize runner-up and $2,500 in text-to-vote competition; founder Henry Owen will use winnings to help fund development of high-density urban farm and learning center to supplement existing network of 20 gardens throughout Mecklenburg County.

Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Asheville, launched one-time grant program in fall 2011 that awarded over $200,000 to 17 organizations serving the region?s most vulnerable populations.
