A 'No Learning Nation' it is as teachers and lecturers paralyze ...

Speaking on behalf of the Kenya National Association of Parents, Secretary General Musau Ndunda assured the government that they would move to the court in a bid to seek for a postponement of this year?s national examinations should the government fail to resolve the ongoing stalemate. ?We as the Association will move to the Court to seek for an order to stop the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) together with Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, because pupils and students in the public schools are very ill prepared for the forthcoming examinations,? vowed Ndunda.

While making reference to a 2002 Court ruling, Ndunda said that a ruling had been passed by a judge in reference for future cases allowing for extension of examination periods following a teacher?s strike which had persisted over 28 days. ?For this reason, we do expect that the Court will exercise jurisdiction into this matter and ensure that the examinations are stopped. This would be unfair to our pupils who are in public school as you all know that Private schools are continuing with their programs unabated,? Ndunda reiterated.

The Industrial Court has today ruled that the ongoing teacher?s strike which began early on Monday is unconstitutional and defies the issued Court order. The teachers who have been demanding for a 300 percent pay rise denied of having received any Court orders from the said institution.

On the other hand, an offer by government to University?s lecturers and non-teaching staff has been rejected terming it as immoral. The lectures who downed their tools on Thursday categorically stated that the 0.5 percent offer could not award them any house allowances as it is too little going by the current prevailing economic crisis. While addressing a press conference, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) National Secretary General Muga K?olale stated that, ?It?s unreasonable that the same government which gave a 400 percent pay hike to a certain cadre of the University staff thinks that it can offer the rest of the staff a 0.5 percent pay rise and a zero percent house allowance. This amounts to gross injustice, unfairness and blatant violation of constitutional rights.?

Despite the fact that the lecturers agreed to attend a planed negotiations meeting to be convened on Monday next week, the UASU National Chairman Sammy Kubasu clarified that the lecturers will stay put in their ongoing strike until the government commits itself in making reasonable offers pertaining their demands.

Meanwhile, a programme aimed at offering guidance to new students joining Universities on how to cope with life in the higher learning institutions has been launched. The Programme commenced its operations early Monday this week and it?s spearheaded by World Changers Christian International Centre. The programme which is based at the YMCA Basketball Court seeks to edify fresh University students ?freshers? on how to best keep off from falling prey to the criminal activities, prostitution and drug abuse which has featured in most of the higher learning institutions in the country. This comes in the wake of the ongoing raging debate of ?Campus Divas for Rich Men?, which has caused a stir on just how students shift focus from their core objectives towards a fruitful career path. Students are set to benefit greatly on how to select good friends, life partners, self-control, self-esteem, self-worth, security among other vital virtues considered ?primary? in ensuring a better stay in the campus life.
