OnLive will be available on Sony Google TV player despite Gaikai deal

This has been an interesting week in the world of cloud gaming. Not too long before Sony announced it was buying Gaikai for $380 million, an upcoming Sony Google TV player was shown as having support for OnLive. So what?s the deal with that?

Sony didn?t have an exclusivity deal with OnLive of any sort. OnLive is available on a variety of devices including the Vizio Co-Star Google TV box. The fact that OnLive will also be available on a Sony manufactured device is merely a Google TV thing.

An OnLive representative confirmed this with The Verge. OnLive is helping as many manufacturers as it can optimize the OnLive app on their devices.

The OnLive Android app is a good way to look at this whole thing. OnLive is available in Google Play for any Android device that can support it. Just because Sony went all in with Gaikai doesn?t mean the app will suddenly stop working on the Xperia Play. It?s not a?manufacturer?specific application.
